Hydration Detailers?

Nothing can replace good ole fashioned water. Hydrating starts well before you become dehydrated. I stopped detailing in the summer down here in Florida. I remember doing a detail a couple summers ago, I drank 12 16oz bottles of water during a 4 hour detail.

Water is a fool's errand in extreme conditions when your body is losing salts and minerals and muscle cramping starts. You need to replace salts in order to treat cramping induced by ion imbalance. Plain water ain't gonna cut it, no way, no how when your blood is being thinned in severe condtions. When I was cycling I would hear this mantra and see people on the sag wagon who insisted on only drinking water. Those drinks like Gatorade were developed for a reason and there are plenty of newer drinks that have science behind them. It is the same with detailing products. Laundry soap and Turtle wax may have been fine in the '60s but there are better products out there today that are far more optimal.

Water is best, however, a lot of water alone can flush electrolytes. Out here in AZ (where it will be 115 today), the locals, (whom I listen too...) told me to mix 50%/50% Gatorade and Water... When I arrived in AZ two 1/2 months ago, I was told to drink a lot of fluids. Take it from me... I've already been to the hospital twice in my first two weeks here... The IV's were wonderful did the trick, but at $2k a pop (in the E.R.), it's better to know when to take breaks and what to drink.

Your friend was right, soda, alcohol, coffee, etc.. will dehydrate you. The cramps your getting are not good... Your weight loss is probably from both, fluid loss and calorie burning. Make sure you take breaks and have healthy snacks, such as an energy bars or something to get an instant shot of calories. Make sure you stop and get food... (healthy food that is easy to digest as your body needs a certain amount of energy to digest and process food).

There is a thing called "crashing", and that is when you are burning more calories in a single moment than you have taken in for the day. That happened to me once on a 30 mile road-bicycle trip in 2015. A few power-bars from a gas station got me in "limp-home-mode" to complete the trip. But it was scary!

Heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke. I've been told by an MD it is not good to experience either, but it's far worse to experience them repeatedly, especially in a short time span as the effects (short and long-term) get worse with every repeated occurrence.

Stay hydrated my friend!

p.s. Here is one more tip... get yourself either an Ozark 10x10 or 10x20 canopy. They sell them at Walmart. You, the vehicles and detailing supplies need to be out of the direct sunlight for long periods of time.

There is one really good indicator of hydration. If you are not peeing or if your pee is dark you are probably getting dehydrated. You should be forcing down enough fluids so that you are expelling sufficient amounts of fluids through your kidneys to keep them happy. It may not feel pleasant but it is imperative that you keep sufficient fluids in your body mass so that normal kidney function is proceeding.

Water all day, and all night. I drink a gallon a day and no less. But, for on the spot remedies should you get cramps from dehydration, salt tablets. I used them in track and cross country in high school all the time for cramps. Work in about 10 minutes.

I like salt tablets in the extreme but many fitness snobs consider them to be bad for you. Fitness drinks tend to do the same thing as salt tablets without the snob condemnation.

Recently, I've been using anti-leg-cramp homeopathic tablets with good results. Hyland's Leg Cramps | Hyland's Homeopathic

And how much do fitness drinks cost compared to salt tablets LOL.................

People take vitamins every day so this imho falls into the supplementation arena.

Gatorade is fine but you don't need to chug nothing but gatorade. Having gatorade here and there is fine but the majority you need is water. You also don't need an extra 2000 calories from pure sugar at the same time.

What capsules is this describing?

Thank you, amen. :dblthumb2:

It's hydration. Keep it simple lol its usually the most effective. It's like polishing a car, you don't need 20 steps and 40 different compounds and polishes. You just need a good compound and a good polish. Same thing as hydration. You need water and electrolytes to replenish lost ones.

Reading this thread, I'm thankful I don't live in an extremely hot/humid area.

This allows me to hydrate with a nice, iced-down cooler of delicious beer. :xyxthumbs:

However, when I'm not enjoying a beer, it's strictly water for me. I never drink or consume any sugary/energy drinks. They make me feel almost "ill" in a way.

Last week after detailing 5 vehicles in 3 days (in the sun), I developed the most excruciating thigh cramp on the third day. Each day when I returned home I would weigh myself before showering and would lose 5-6 lbs. I thought I was properly hydrating as I had water, soda and watermelon. I read through several post about "staying hydrated" but can't seem to find what works best. I talked with a friend who is a nurse and she told me soda was the worst while out in the sun working and that Gatorade and Powerade were best. Any other remedies?

Go to a bicycle store they sell all that stuff in tablets.

It's "oppressive" right now on my slice of Tampa swamp land. 10:00 PM, 86 degrees and you need a machete to slice through the humidity.

PS I lived in South Jersey, L.I. Suffolk County, DC area and South Carolina when I was younger so I've experienced summers in all those places. :dblthumb2:

Ever get that South Jersey smell out of your clothes, Mark?:laughing:

35 years ago, the irony is I worked on the same boardwalk as Bob Mckee, Seaside Heights. We talked about it when I met him at DF 10.

Bob's retired, I'm still working :work:

Bob was a visionary and an entrepreneur and he never gave up and that's one of the things I admire about him. The thing I most admire about him is he knew when to take the money and run so to speak. Bob if you ever read this, I know it was so you could spend the rest of your time with your lovely wife who was there with you side by side over the years. I sincerely wish you the both best and hope you are putting many miles on the RV and enjoying your time together.

Bob is "hydrating" with life now. Well deserved.

are you eating lunch? most people are lightest in the morning then gain weight as the day goes on

Maybe one or two servings a day on something like cytomax, but at 90 calories per serving with 10-12 oz of water if I drink 100 oz of water a day that's like 850-900 extra calories a day and a 120 grams of sugar carbs and maltodextrin, fructose and dextrose are the top three main ingredients. Everything in moderation and that applies big time to sugary drinks and sports drinks and diet type drink products with artificial sweeteners.

Nailed it
