Nanoskin clay....is it really that good?

I'm a user of the tried and true "traditional" clay bar. Flirting with the idea of trying something that may offer better results. I've read a bunch on Nanskin Autoscrub. Using a polisher to rub "rubber" on your paint...really? Great reviews but hard to believe.

For those who used this, is this product really that good?
Is there anything recommended for better quality results?
Does this leave micro marring like traditional clay bars?

I know I'll killed for this reply, but I'm a big boy.

I hate clay marring, and the thought of spinning a "clay" anything over my paint at any RPM is not for me.

We found nanoskin to be extremely helpful in that it was a fantastic time saver, and they last a considerably long time... so for a business that did 99% paint correction work, they were the perfect option. We could "clay" an entire vehicle in 15-20 minutes no problem.

However, for personal use, I would not recommend synthetic clay products unless you are planning to polish after use as they do mar the paint. Take a little extra time and use traditional fine grade clay as there is much less chance of marring. The marring from nanoskin is very easily removed, however if you are not planning on polishing there is NO reason to use one in my opinion of several years of using the nanoskin mitts.

This is a TREMENDOUS help! Thank you, very informative and answered my question perfectly. I'm sticking to the clay bar. Impossible to find some kind of a chart showing competitors clay bar aggression scale. I typically will by something like Meg's Clay Kit or Mother's but I do this blindly not knowing how aggressive the clay is. I clay frequently so a non-aggressive fine would work perfectly.

I no longer use traditional clay. I use the Blue Towel (autoscrub) and use it after washing my ride. It's faster than traditional clay. Additionally, if you drop the Nanoskin all you do is rinse and move on as opposed to throwing the clay bar away or take your chances by using a dropped clay bar.

You do not need to use lube with the Autoscrub towel. Your car wash soap is the lube which is better than any lube that I have used.

The biggets thing I like about the NanoSkin is that you reduce your claying time significantly. I say you can finish in less than 1/2 the time compared to clay. No need to knead and reform the nanoskin like you do clay. Once you use the Nanoskin, you will never go back to clay.

PS: I have not experienced any "marring" issues with Nanoskin. My guess when that happens is when the panel is hot. But using the autoscrub towel I have not experienced any marring issues.

We washed indoors in a climate controlled shop. The vehicles were not even warm to the touch, so that was not the issue.

On a truly contaminated vehicle, it was almost guaranteed that we would see considerable marring with the nanoskin products... again, this was of NO concern to us whatsoever since we would be correcting every vehicle anyway, so the nanoskin was a tremendous time saver in removing heavy contamination quickly and effectively.

Examples of marring - notice the funny looking hazy spots that highlight the orange peel and sort of look like water spots if you're just glancing at the picture. That is marring caused by the mitt or towel that was used on this soft jet black, heavily contaminated vehicle.

I talked about this in my thread on the Nanoskin back in 2013:

Any clay or alternative "clay" mars. Period.

Hell, we all debate on here the way some cheap MF's with QD mar paint.

So a clay won't mar?

I had some problems with marring until I started using Glide. I haven't had any problems since.

I use a nanoskin disc on a dual action polisher. It is a BIG time saver and less tiring compared to regular clay. I have found I get less visible marring if I use my porter cable 7424 vs my flex 3401, for obvious reasons I think. The marring isn't too bad in my experience, but I always use plenty of lube. Most of the time I follow up with a one step polish so if there is any marring it is not a big deal.

For vehicles with heavy contamination though I do still reach for the traditional clay bar a lot of times or if I'm doing glass. I own a car dealership and detail many off lease vehicles that I buy each week. So for me anything I can use on a machine that saves time and my muscles is always a big plus.

You can do a lot of vehicles with a single nanoskin disc, depending on the vehicle size and how bad the contamination is. Biggest thing I like about the nanoskin is how you can easily clean it unlike a regular clay bar.

Now as far as other "nano" type clay bars you use by hand, I have never been a big fan. For me they never worked well and I always went back to the old fashioned clay bar. The disc on the polisher I am a big fan of though and it works great. I can usually do an entire car in half the time I'd say.

ok so I have used clay and the nanoskin pad on a porter cable. When I first used the nanoskin pad I could see the pad prints all over my car. This was due to me using a detail spray that I had not mixed correctly and was way over diluted.

Since I have fixed the dilution ratio I used the nanoskin again on the porter cable at speed 5 to 5.5 and I do put some pressure down on it. I spray the heck out of the car and I keep spraying in the area I am working. Now just like polishing I will do a few passes but at a much faster rate of speed and the last one or two passes I will use lighter pressure. So maybe 4 to 6 passes depending on how bad it is.

I have not had ANY marring using the pad this way... no imprints no scratches .. nothing

Now also the first time I used it not only was the dilution not right but I also didnt break it in on the glass like I later on read thats what you should do with that first before putting it on the paint.

I've not used a polisher powered Clay, but I have used clay mitts, but I'll never let one touch my paint. After a certain amount of time, it really seems to depend, the clay part gets tacky, so the above mentioned "just rinse it off" certainly doesn't work, which ended up being an absolute polishing nightmare for me since I'm considered one of the more detail oriented of my co-workers. I'll not use one, even if it is a time saver. As for using soap as a lube, I've had luck and I've also had messes. Most of the time there was going to be some grade of correction going on so I wasn't too concerned, but still. I'm pretty happy with the aggression level that a Mother's Clay bar provides, and compared to some that I've used, it doesn't marr nearly as much and works pretty well. I'm sure there's better out there, yeah. But I like it anyway and can usually get it at a halfway decent price too :)

I own both fine grade and medium clay disks. Also own their sponges too. I have never marred my black paint with the "fine" grade. I also find less swirling and defects from the claying process. I do use glide deluted. I still love using a traditional clay bar too but on a hood or door panel the disks are great.

If you don't like Nanoskin try the Chemical Guys clay pad. I've had good luck with it.

The main value I see with the pads is you can drop them and rinse them off. I have not had problems with marring or swirling with the synthetic products.

I know a few people who had tearing issues with the CG version disk. But CG doesn't offer a special lube like glide. While I do like Clay Uber for claybars I don't know if it's good enough for a spinning clay disk.

It's really tough to beat the nanoskin system when it comes to clay disks.

Just to clarify, I was not referencing the CG disk. I was talking about the square, black, rectangular, hand-held pad. It works quite well with any lube that I've tried. CG clay lube is very good but Meguiars quick detailer is cheaper.
