ceramic coatings vs Zaino

That scratch may be deep enough where you will have to live with it (aka a RID).

If you get a chance check out this video and check out the tips Corey has on UK and Essence.

Looks like you did not break down Essence enough. A gloss pad has no cut just an FYI.

Around the 8:15 mark is a good place to learn the difference between the coatings

Around the 6:45 mark on how to apply UK

Essence and some helpful tips around the 2:40 mark

Guess we know the coating but then again maybe I missed the part where it was already announced.

Yup, Cquartz UK. More thoughts later but Essence didn't cut like I thought it would or apply like I thought, and CQUK is taking a long time to flash compared to the videos and when I hit it with the microsuede, feels like I'm just moving it around. Again, could be the humidity - never thought that would be an issue in Northern California - allegedly 55% humidity according to yahoo weather.

On 2nd coat now, going to let it sit a bit longer to see if it wipes off better.

Essence and cut don't really go in the same sentence but keep marching on!

No tire coating, didn't do wheels yet. Recommendations?

Check out Gyeon Rim and Gyeon Tire.

Gtechniq C5 to coat the wheels. Lots of options for tires. McKee's 37 or Tuf shine for a tire coating. For a water based tire gel CarPro Perl and McKee's 37 are nice choices. Gyeon tire is also nice.

Glad to see another Portland area guy on here...I've been experimenting on our daily drivers since moving out here from MI where outdoor detailing was great 6 months out of the year. Here in Portland, though, it seems that 8-9 months out of the year make it challenging to detail if you don't have a full garage.

I'm a Meguiars guy and likely won't switch because it's familiar and easy and I am satisfied with the results, but love reading the discussions here.

So, I guess a bit of a closing summary.
I ended up ordering these particular products because I could get them delivered by the weekend. Living in CA, it's impossible (it seems) to get product from Autogeek delivered by the weekend unless you pay a ridiculous amount for quicker shipping. I get that some of these products have to travel by ground but you either have to plan way ahead, or then compromise somewhere. I chose the latter. So while I wanted to try the Mckee's 37 line, it wasn't an option.

Essence was tough to work with for some reason, and the Cquartz UK went on easily but didn't flash the way I expected. The day after, I could see some spots (high spots) I had missed, even using a flashlight.

Detailing a large SUV like the Q7 took a long time - over 12 hours on Saturday and another 3-4 on Sunday for the interior and other things.

My PC 7336 seems not much different from the 7424XP I ordered, so I ended up returning the latter. I also picked up a Harbor Freight polisher that was well reviewed, plugged it in and noticed it had 3x the vibration of the PC, so back in the box it went.

There are lots of different types of microfiber cloths and I ordered a few different ones to try. While the ones at Costco are cheap, they are just that - cheap. Get better cloths for your detailing.

In closing, thanks for your advice. My wife mused that "I don't know anyone who would spend 12 hours detailing a brand new car." Well, I'm glad to be one of those people. :). It's been a while since I undertook a detailing project this big, and I will definitely do more.

Wow...you musta been really hustling! Took me 18 months to get to the "Yep, that'll do nicely..." point with our cars.

Edit: Bet the roof of that thing was a whole lotta 'no fun'.

Congrats on getting the big Audi done in 12 hours, well, outside anyways because I have a Fiat 500 Abarth and I spent almost that much time doing my car in the spring of this year, but that was EVERYTHING on the outside and a 2nd coat of WGU ceramic paint coating.

As far as your high spots go, well, its your first time out and the product you chose doesn't have the forgiveness of say gloss coat, so I wouldn't sweat it too much. I assume you knocked them down already and if so, how did you go about that, wipe with a MF towel or a little bit more on your pad afterwards and rubbing it in some more?

Danix, I wish I saw this thread sooner. I possibly could have helped. If you have any questions or need something, just shoot me a PM. I'm in the East Bay right next to Oakland.

I was able to get most of it down with a MF and reload spray. The rest of them she won't notice :)
