Will a ceramic coating hold up to Midwest winter?

My previous ride was a Cadillac ATS4 that was coated with McKee’s Paint Coating version 1.0. It laughed at the Chicago winter and its assorted road chemicals. My wife drives from our home in Plainfield to up by Midway 6 days a week and the coating on her vehicle has held up just fine. Her Durango R/T is coated with Optimum Gloss Coat. It gets three to four times the mileage my Cadillac did and now Chevy SS does. This will be its second winter with Gloss Coat so we’ll know by spring if the two year plus durability claim is real or just marketing bs. Plus we’ll see how a year old bottle of McKee’s Paint Coating does on my SS.

BTW: Her vehicle gets rinseless washed with ONR and my SS gets washed with McKee’s N914. Almost no two bucket washes are done on either vehicle any more.

I've never had an issue with waterspots not coming off with a routine wash, has anyone else?

Only recently I noticed a few issues. One of my vehicles just hit the 12-month mark wearing McKee's 37 Paint Coating and I noticed a few water spots on the hood after it sat in the sun following a hard rain. I could not get them to wash out.

This did NOT happen when the coating was fresh and only recently appeared. My theory is the coating is on it's downward decline. My plan all along was to only go 18 months, which is this coming Spring, so I'm not too worried.

Have you considered using a coating booster?

I could, but my feeling is any coating that needs frequent boosts is no better than a sealant you hit with a spray wax to do the same thing. I was also using the vehicle as a test to see exactly how long the coating could go on it's own. Overall, I've been pretty happy with the performance.

I have used McKee's High Gloss Detail Spray, and now Kenotek as a drying aid, but I don't expect any protective benefit to last more than a couple days. I expect the coating to do that part.

Absolutely. Wet car, sun comes out and bakes it for 10 hours, likely with dirt and road grime on the car... spots. It seems like coatings spot worse than clear coat, but not sure. After a few months I always have some water spots that need to be polished off.

•I’m trying one out on the truck this
Winter (2017-2018). I’ll see how it
works out in my neck of the woods.

•One thing I really like about this product:
-After a rain event...it appears that
water doesn’t form beads that have
a very high contact angle.

•As an example:
-Here’s a hood photo taken yesterday
(Sunday, 11.05.2017) ~12:00 noonish,
and before last night’s rain event.

-Here’s a photo of the hood taken today
(Monday, 11.06.2017), ~12:00 noonish,
and after being inundated by last night’s
rain event of 4.5”:

Which coating are you using?

What about Mequiar's Fast Finish with a coat of their Ultimate wax ? My white Denali will be tough to keep clean in our Mich. winter . The salt and sand even get into the door jambs which I have use the FF and wax to get ready .
what else can a novice detailer do to keep my truck not only clean but protected as well ? White is such a tough color to get that wet look finish that we all strive for .

I used the Meguiars Fast Finish since my truck is lifted alot of the underside is visable. I used it on my undercarriage rear axle and wheel wells and it works great. Been a year and still holding up.

I agree with this statement, and I've suspected the coating is wearing thin at this point simply because of the time relationship. I've had Gyeon Mohs on my car since 2016, so when the spring of 2018 comes around, a full detail, light correction and recoating will be in order.

Agree, but this hasn't been my experience early in the process. But, yes, coating or not, leaving the car with dust/grime out in the sun after getting wet is a recipe for water spots. Some come off with washing. Some come off with water spot removers -- but then the hydrophobic properties of the coating become dysfunctional. The rest need polishing.

I just think that Roger washes his car they way one should to avoid the issues... Me? I'm way too lazy to wash more than once per week.
