I am looking to try a really strong wheel cleaner for the tough, tough job that occasionally comes along. I have been using ARO and 303 cleaner full strength but was wondering if either DP or P21 gel is better?

I just tried the 1z wheel cleaner and my fathers a4 wheels never looked better. It says on the bottle that it does not contain acid or lye but it has something in it. The smell is very strong but it works.

Strong, yet safe wheel cleaner is DP. Even stronger - Poorboy's Spray and Rinse. It is so strong it eats up through a chemical sprayer. Poorboy's S-n-R is not for all wheels though.

I've had great success with Meg's Wheel Brightener on wheels that were no match for any other cleaner I've tried. It worked wonders on an Explorer I did not too long ago where the DP gel wouldn't even budge the brake residue on it.

Wow..when you compare the price..Megs is the winner..and that is without being diluted. Do you generally dilute it, and if so, how much?

richy the megs wheel brightner needs to be diluted..never use it full strenth..i don't know the ratios off hand with out going to look at the bottle be aware of the type of wheels your appling it too

On the info page, it says up to 4:1. It says safe for plastic wheels which are probably the easiest to damage, I would think??

DP is a joke if you're looking for a STRONG wheel cleaner. P21S isnt that strong either, but stronger then DP. From my experience, PB Spray and Rinse is the next step up from P21S. Be sure to follow directions exactly and watch what wheels you use it on.

If a wheel cleaner contains Hydrofluoric Acid, it’s not worth the risk to use it! http://www.pbs.org/now/science/chemsafenotes.html

Meguiar's Wheel Brightener (pH 5) is formulated with Hydrofluoric acid that is a solution of hydrogen fluoride in water. It is corrosive, and highly poisonous. Skin contact with concentrated hydrofluoric acid or inhalation of its vapour has caused many serious injuries, even death. Concentrated solutions of hydrofluoric acid pass quickly through the skin and cause deep, painful burns. Dilute solutions also penetrate the skin, but it does not give the immediate burning sensation caused by the concentrated form of the acid, a user may tend to be less aware of the contact with the acid.

It is used to etch glass, but also has the unique ability to dissolve almost all inorganic oxides. In the human body, hydrofluoric acid reacts with calcium and damages nerves, bone, and several organs including the heart and kidneys - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrofluoric_acid

Note-
a) Acid is highly corrosive! The skull and crossbones warning on an acid label is there for a reason; acids will etch or erode anything in its path, they are also very effective in dissolving metals.

b) The addition of a molecule of water to a chemical compound, without forming any other products is known as hydration (i.e. dilution causes the pH to decrease) But since pH is not a very good indicator of the strength of the acid in every system, this approach won't always produce the desired results. Dilution - adding water to an acid it lowers its pH, i.e. it becomes more acidic; this process is called hydrolysis)

Alternative products –
P21S Gel or Liquid Wheel Surface Cleaner (Green) originally developed in 1976 by a German chemist, a water-based, (non-acid) detergent that provides terrific cleaning and guarantees not to damage painted, clear-coated, or anodized wheels -

P21S Gel Wheel Surface Cleaner (422, Red) – manufacturers approved way to remove corrosive brake dust and road grime from alloy wheels. Safe, pH controlled, formula is guaranteed not to harm any type of road wheel, braking system or other automotive surface, works safely and effectively on every type of wheel and coating, removes brake pad adhesive and sequestered metal brake dust safely -

Holy crap! Thanks for the warning TOGWT! I will stick with my ARO! None for me thank you very much

you get what you pay for. I'd rather use a stronger car wash soap (Citrus Wash-n-Gloss, or NXT), but not acid based wheel cleaner.

Having used the Poorboys extensively when it was first released, I would never go any harsher personally. It truly is a Spray/Rinse product but you must follow the directions first including wetting wheels prior to spraying.

corrosive and acidic wheel cleaners are what most detailers use. because they work fast and clean good . but the long term affects are bad. for example i used to use a pro all purpose cleaner on my dash board in my dumptruck for years because thats what its ment for . but recently the color is coming off and peeling. not good. and if you read the label it says for professional use only !!! thats why !! live and learn
