Rupes 15. Or?

Some “team red and black” idiot out in Pensacola Florida. Guess my babies weight when born and you win a boss 21, tornador Black, gtechniq exo etc. he’s out of business now. First name Terry.
Anywho.

My pc has been doing a great job but I’m just looking to spend money honestly. My pc has I think a 6” standard backing plate. I ordered it on my very first order on chemguys with vss, 32,34,36,38.
It’s kinds loud but it does work.

Best backing plate recommendation for the 7424? Maybe I just need a new backing plate. I’ve been using the LC pads they don’t last very long. Was going to go meguiars microfiber cutting and polish along with some foams.

I can get the mark2 for $360 so figured it was a good investment

The 6" backing plate gives crazy vibrations at higher speeds. I can use it, and it will work. It will let me know that it's not happy! When I use a 5" plate the 7424xp is relatively smoother, and effective, even at higher speeds. All of these tools are noisy. I wear earplugs, or ear buds.

LC pads are pretty tough - unless you got the Hydrotech, which take a little more care in use. However, I'm not a fan of the traditional orange and white foams.. They will work, and are the most popular in the industry. Megs pads are also great. Whenever possible, use the plate offered by the manufacturer / supplier of the pads. Microfiber pads in general will tremendously boost the performance of the PC. 7424xp.

I also notice that you got the Chemical Guys plate. That plate features long hooks, designed to go with the pads they sell. Lake Country plates have a "micro hook" design. This could also be another reason for the LC pads falling apart.

I would never discourage you from spending your money. But if you want to hold on to a huge chunk of cash, get the 5" plate, some microfiber and foam pads, and some Meguiar's Ultimate Compound + Ultimate Polish. On a tool like a PC7424xp, they work great becaise the abrasives don't have a "break down" cycle. If a diminishing abrasive doesn't break down completely you can be left with some hazing. You could also try the M100 and M205 from Meguiar's professional lines.

Actually, simple set up could be:
1 - 5" Meguiar's plate
4 - 5" Meguiar's microfiber cutting discs
4 - 5" Meguiar's yellow foam polishing discs
2 - 5" Meguiar's black foam finishing discs

1 - 32oz D300 Microfiber Correction Compound
1 - 32oz M205 Ultra Finishing Polish
1 - 16oz M21 Synthetic Sealant

That set up should be able to get anything you need done.

I look at spending money as an investment only if it generates revenue by either me using it, an employee using it, or renting it out.

I found all the chemguys products were ...... lol no comment. I’ve been using hd speed, 205, 101, 105.
I’ll order a new backing plate for it 5” from meguiars and some microfiber cutting and polishing discs.
Is the black/ yellow foam polishing discs the same material as a LC? Like it’s still a fat foam pad or a thinner disc?

I don’t use my pc often so maybe I’ll hold off on a new one while trying this new setup.
It’s literally burning a hole in my pocket to upgrade something, maybe I’ll get a di tank or new stickers or something lol

I like the yellow megs polishing pad a LOT more than the white LC. The black pads are very similar.

Spending money is too easy here!

I'd stay with the PC because you can also get smaller pads for it, where the 15 is pretty much set up for the 5/6" pads.

The GG6 to me isn't worth the trouble to sell the PC, and it isn't so much "better" in performance for me to want to make a switch. The PC is durable, reliable, and effective.

The new plate/pads will make a lot of difference.

My 3401 feels like an antique compared to the Mille.

I think a lot of it for me is the sound. The 3401 is much harsher sounding. I have a buddy who is 100% deaf....am tempted to have him use both and see what his thoughts are.

I do know a lot of what makes the Mille Smoother is the pad system. I fought it initially but then jumped in 100% buying a full set of all their pads. If I put a L.C. Hybrid Force on it, the Mille will be just as much a handful as the Flex in use.

I still use them both but if I'm running wool pads, I use the Flex as it just seems to handle them better. Besides, I think the L.C. Wool pad works better than the Rupes Coarse wool for cutting. I have two of their pads but I won't be buying more as LC works better.

Not helping here folks...

I hate that feeling of waiting when you know you are sure. Seems like you are waiting for that ONE post to dissuade you. (At least for me). Lol

If you want the Mille, put your finger on that trigger and pull it.

I’m not sure I thought I was sure but I’m going to try a new backing plate on the 7424. Glad I made this post or I would have just ordered the mark 2 and been about my day.

I was referencing Budget's post, but the PC is a different animal with a 5" BP.

dlc95 has an incredible tip/machine technique if you'd like to know, I am sure he'd be glad to share in a PM. Plus, he's the "Pad master".

Any questions on pads, he's your man.

You are too kind!

I admit that with the recent influx of newer, and proprietary system pads, they've gotten away from me a bit. However I have a decent grasp of legacy pads!

Yes, you can PM me, or find Sloppy Jaloppy Auto Polishing on FB, and send a message.

The Master of All Pads*

You guys are getting awfully close to copyright infringement. I'll be watching you both very closely. :bat:

Good thread..... lots of good opinions and experience being shared...

Just to throw a wrench into the machine, besides the FLEX 3401 and the RUPES Mille there is also the Makita PO5000C - which is a gear-driven orbital with a 5mm orbit stroke length

FLEX 3401 = 8mm orbit stroke length
RUPES Mille = 5mm orbit stroke length
Makita PO5000C = 5mm orbit stroke length

With great abrasive technology and the right pad all of them can take a diamond in the rough and turn it into a glistening gemstone.

:)

Pull the trigger already! You know it's just a matter of time anyway.

Just not sure if gonna be a large enough improvement over Flex, which I like but can be a bit tiring after 4-5 hours.

LK900E Mille
(6) 5.5 Pad kit x 3 (blue, yellow, white)
(6) 5.5 Medium Wool
(6) 5.5 Coarse Wool

Around $600 for above setup and, well, since April I've only done 2 cars. While I definitely would like to give it a try I'm not even sure it would get used much before season comes to a close.

If you're not detailing cars on a regular basis, I'm not sure I'd advise spending the money. It's not necessarily an "upgrade" over a flex. I see it as a lateral move at best. I mean there's nothing it really offers over a Flex that will change what you do or how you do it other than perhaps a bit less fatigue. It won't change the fact that you're still doing work for 4-5hrs.

I do 1-2 cars per week and like the flexibility and I also work 2 polishers by myself, one on each side of the car, flip flop pads without much effort and often have my son helping out, etc. If it's just you doing a couple cars now and then on your own, not likely the best way to spend $600.

Yeah, but some of us are tool guys and just have to have it.

There is always that too.

In the drumming world, guys will have upwards of ten drum sets, complete with hardware, and cymbals. That's thousands of dollars.

The going rate for a premium quality 17" crash cymbals - a sheet of bronze essentially is about $400.00.
