Maintaining means doing something frequently - Touching the surface
These are the entrance doors to a local restaurant. Notice how the portion of the brass handle on the right side is clean and shiny.
The simple act of people touching the brass handle on the right hand door keeps it clean and shiny.
The reason the upper portion of the brass handle on the right hand door leading into the restaurant is clean and shiny is because that's the handle and the area on the handle that everyone grabs to open the door to go into the restaurant.
Here's the point, the simple act of having human hands, (skin), with a little oil, perspiration, etc. on a person's hands, TOUCHING the brass handle maintains a clean, shiny finish on the handle. The other handle, that gets grabbed a lot less looks dull and tarnished.
Here's the point, if you want your car to look clean and shiny, you need to do "something" to it on a regular basis. For most of us, this would be washing our car. But it also includes touching or maintaining the glass, plastic, polished metal surfaces like trim and wheels, etc.
If you regularly touch these areas, using a matching product, for example a trim product for plastic trim, then the area of your car will always look good. It's only when you neglected the maintenance aspect of your car that its appearance will go down hill.
