I hate to throw away vintage buffing products but I'm also NOT a Pack-Rat, although if you were to see my office right now you would disagree.
That said, here's some pictures of the original Pro Detailer's Series Foam Buffing Pads from the 1980's. Before this, Meguiar's only had their yellow foam polishing pad. When they introduced this 3-pad system they were introducing what was probably the first foam "cutting" pad and foam "finishing" pad.
I remember when these came out because I bought them and used them and then called Meguiar's Customer Care Hotline to let them know the pink foam cutting pad didn't last long at all. In fact, you could really only get one car out of it as while you used it the foam would shred in a cone pattern. This was a closed-cell foam formula, you can tell in one of the close-up pictures because you can see the shiny membrane intact with the cell wall structure surrounding it.
The last pad you see is the only one I have left in my antique wax collection. You can obviously it's completely disintegrated and that's because it was used and had "polish", probably Meguiar's #9 Swirl Remove "in it" and over time the chemicals basically broke the foam down. We're talking about 30 years now. I could have left it out of the picture but then there would be no picture representation of this 3-pad system.
I also have multiple catalogs for the complete "first" entry into what at the time, (the 1980's), as the introduction of their new Pro Detailer Line. I'll dig them up and share them as they also included some interesting products.
Without further ado, and so I can move onto my next project, here's the pictures. And these are also shown and discussed in the video.
See the shiny spots? Those are membranes.
Looking sad - I have to wonder what car I buffed out with this pad back in the 1980s?
Early foam pads were THICK! This pad measures 1 7/8" thick.
And they were large - 7 13/16" wide
And they cost about $10.00
The good news is, Meguiar's has continually evolved their foam buffing pads and offers an exceptionally high quality selection for today's modern tools and products.
