Other hobbies or past times outside of detailing

We've been winding down our schedule as we all get older and less energetic, but I spent much of the last 30 years of my life as part of a local Dirt Sprint Car team. After being fans for many years, a few friends and I purchased and reconstructed a used Winged Sprint Car and travelled the local tracks around Western PA and Eastern Ohio.
Wins were few and far between, being such a low-buck operation, but eventually we got to where we were consistent top-ten finishers, albeit in the lower half of the top ten.

I found a fun new hobby this year.

I also have a Strat and a Tele.

Don’t ask me to play you anything.
But I sure can spend all my money on these things!

Finished another project. I've had this kit about 30 years, but it was so cheap, read poor quality, and basic that I never felt motivated to do it. With lock down dragging on, I decided to give it a go. All the decals had gone bad, so I had to hand paint the markings on, and used YouTube for weathering techniques. I'm pretty pleased with the results. View attachment 74268View attachment 74269View attachment 74270

Yeah, the little R2-D2 is designed to be removable, you can have the X-Wing with the landing gear down, and little R2 next to it, but I glued it in. To get his markings right, I googled a lot of images, then everytime I went in to ebay it was trying to sell me R2-D2 stuff, key chains, hats, cushions, all sorts of stuff, this went on for a couple of weeks.

So did I get a hat, or a keychain??:laughing:

Not sure how I missed this...

Now that I'm a semi-empty nester and my life has simplified in other ways, I'm starting to revive some hobbies and explore new ones.

- Autocross: Great motor sport and I'm in my second full season, but have dabbled a few seasons before too.
- Fishing: Nothing serious, but it's nice to get away and drown some bait once in a while. I'm starting to eyeball some angler kayaks which will open up lots of possibilities in the small lakes/ponds in my area.
- Food/drink: My wife and I love to try out new food, and I really like trying products from micro-breweries
- Travel: Nothing serious or extravagant. We live in an incredibly diverse country on an incredibly diverse planet. No time like the present to start seeing as much of it as possible!

I'll also dabble with the occasional Lego kits. I've got a few Start Wars machines I built with my girls when they were younger, but my latest effort is the Porsche 911 RSR Technic kit. It's going to take me a while to finish that one off...and find space for it!

Nice thread folks, i need a few more hobbies.

I have looked into model kits before but know next to nothing about it.

I started with model kits very young, grew out of it in my twenties, moved house last year and found some kits I never finished, or started, and before I knew it, I'm in my fifties and making them again.

There are so many different subjects, prices, and difficulty levels, it would be too hard to recommend any where for you to start. But YouTube is your friend, if you see something that you like, someone will have made a video of themselves making it, might help you decide if it's the right hobby for you.

Dave.
