Multiple years of brake dust/grime not coming off

Hi, i am using Meguiars ultimate all wheel cleaner on a 2008 toyota camry. The rims up close have dings and chips in them so i dont want to use too aggressive a product and mess up the clear coat. The car has not been washed in years and the brake dust and dirt is not coming off completely.

Method im using is letting it sit on for 3 minutes then using a detail brush. Tried using a MF towel and elbow grease but what remains is not coming off.

What can i do?

Additonally is there an OTC product i can use to clean the tires? I got meguiars hot shine high gloss tire spray but i guess its just for shine and not a cleaning agent
 
When your customer's neglect their wheels for eons - there's a price to pay.

Do you have a before picture? I'd like to see what these rims looked like before you got them to where they're at now.


When it comes to that last little bit of baked-on brake dust and road film - that's 2 things, not just brake dust, you might need to use a stronger wheel cleaner.


The Meguiar's product. Note the word ALL in the name. In order to be safely used on ALL wheels by the lowest common denominator among us - companies like Meguiar's have to fool-proof the formula so no one makes a mistake. One way to make a wheel cleaner fool-proof is to make it weak. Or at least not as strong as a product they would formulate for professionals.

Make sense?

Don't get me wrong, Meguiar's makes GREAT products - but pay attention to the words and the "line" it's in.



I'd suggest getting some SONAX wheel cleaner. It's strong AND safe.


SONAX Wheel Cleaner Full Effect 16.9 oz.

Try some polish and a MF Cloth or you may have to start with a tooth brush. Yep.....I've been there done that. Toothbrush, polish, then even just re-hit that area with cleaner, hosed it off and finished with a polish and MF Rag. All depends on how much you agreed to do and cost wise to achieve results.
 
You really can't go wrong with Sonax... This wheels look like they would be a good candidate to come off the car for a deep cleaning package of some sort....

Hi Mike, the top picture is before. Its zoomed out but if you zoom in and look between the spokes its all black and then the second picture is after where there is just a little bit of brown left over

Hi thanks for the response. So basically wash wheel, apply meguiars ultimate polish, re wash wheel. Should come off?

Do the very best you can with wheel cleaner and brushes. Understand that what you're seeing is likely just etched into the clear coat / finish of the wheels. How bad will vary across examples but this one doesn't appear too too bad.

Once clean, yes get some Megs Ultimate Polish on a MF Rag. Do it by hand where needed. If that doesn't work, break out a old soft toothbrush and use it with the polish. If it cleans off, wipe, then re-hit it with polish and MF Rag to remove any marring induced if any. You can simply buff it all off but you may find it easier to just rewash the wheel and start over to remove all the spatter, etc.
