SPAM........ AUGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

We gave up a home phone like 10 years ago

Waste of money, in our situation anyway

Nothing but political and charity begging

We are ment to have a private number but i guess they just randomly dial everyone

Next time, act surprised and say "Oh wow... Really??" and then pause for a second.....

Then tell them that YOU work for a charity collection call center and were just about to call THEM for a donation to your charity.

:laughing::laughing::laughing:

I do this! I say would you like to donate to the Tasmanian detailing foundation i detail for the sick and homeless, please pay via western union :D

There is a national DO NOT CALL system where you can register your number and it is SUPPOSED to stop a lot of this nonsense but as far as I am concerned it never worked as advertised

Yeah, hard to stop a computer generated system that starts with 000-000-0000 and runs through every single possible combination of numbers and then starts over and endlessly repeats

Bottom line?

All the various scams/spams/phishing/whatever work, and they work often enough and well enough that the bad guys keep doing it

sadly

We are on the do not call list BUT once they have the number they share it, the current scam is that i have been withdrawn $500 on ebay and if i want the money back to give them my bank account number.

And the government tax association is coming after me etc, on YT their is a guy from the UK that calls the scam centre's back and hack there FB pages and puts the fear of god in them. It's funny but sad and makes me angry because NOT everyone is as switched on.

Me personally i have been scammed but it was $125 Aud but still sucks ass but you live and sure learn.

Side note - if you know it’s spam, don’t even bother opening it. Sounds like tinfoil hat stuff, but e-mails can have tracking pixels that report back if the email was viewed. (Google: tracking pixel in email).

I never reply to any of the messages that say reply STOP for fear of the same thing.

The one that drives me nuts lately is I’ve been getting flash texts that take over the whole phone. Apparently the only way you’re supposed to get them is from official channels for emergency use, but of course the @ holes have figured that out too…

I hear you, my son in law got sucked in to it, got a call supposedly from the police or troopers about stopping an arrest warrant, and by the time it was over with his account was drained

And he is not stupid nor is he a lawbreaker

They just know what to say and how to present it to play on fears and weaknesses

I was sitting in my office 10 years or so back and got an email on my work computer to my official State of Alaska Court System email address

It was from one of my clerks and she was telling me she had all her stuff stolen from her hotel room in London and she needed me to send her money so she could get home

I got up, walked out, saw her sitting at her desk, and asked her if she was stranded in London

But (and here is where it gets interesting) she had actually just gotten back from a vacation in Britain...

How the f^&* someone could have put that much information together and drug me into it scares me to this day

Our work email was supposed to have some of the best security around but it didn't stop crap like that

Thanks, obviously reporting them as spam/phishing does zero good so in to the trash they go from now on

It seems like I get these sort of scam/nuisance calls and text messages in waves...............and that's despite being on the Do Not Call register.

It has been relatively quiet lately but mid last year the calls and messages were never ending. That includes a lot of automated calls and messages by political parties, we had state and federal elections last year.

It got to the point where I simply stopped answering the phone completely and all random text messages blocked and deleted. From my perspective, if it's important, then the person will be one of my contacts already, they can therefore leave me a voice mail, text or simply email me. I have no reason to speak to anyone on the phone anyway.

What annoys me is the time it wastes. I'm busy and don't need yet another thing to deal with.

Exactly

Normally they just dribble in, it’s one here and there

This is like someone opened the floodgate

I have several apps and services that track my email addresses to see if they have been involved in a hack and they say all clear but something triggered this latest s#!t storm

Hopefully they will move on and leave me alone

I don't get any through email I have a Gmail account that doesn't have my name, just letters and numbers, but I get the occasional SMS, mainly the ones about tracking nonexistent parcels. But I do get the phone calls, and as DFB said, they come in waves, nothing for months, then 3 or 4 in a couple of days, you know the ones, saying they're from Microsoft security and I need to log in to my computer, I just tell them I don't have one, I do everything on my phone. I also used to answer, wait for them to talk and say "Ich spreche kein Englisch", that confused them.

Years ago I used to get the Indian guys calling with the car insurance scam, saying they had a payment and needed my bank account details, I always asked which car had been in an accident, I've got 4 dude, was it the Porsche, the Ferrari, the Lamborghini, or the Bentley. That usually just annoyed them and they hung up.

I rarely get spam texts.
I get a few spam calls a month, but I don't answer numbers I don't recognize.
For e-mail, I'm still on the Yahoo and it does a good job of blocking spam. A few get through every once in a while, but most are blocked.
