What did you do today non-detailing related?

Never heard of that, even in a lawn mower. I know some auto transmissions say sealed for life, but even then there are recommended change intervals. My FJ has no transmission dipstick, but I've had it changed 3 times since I bought it, and the last time I had the diff and transfer case fluids changed as well.

They call it "Just Check And Add Technology", happy reading,..............................................

 
Yeah, Briggs deleted drain plugs a while ago. And yes, the "no oil change required" thing is bullsh.t, clearly intended to shorten the life of the engine and prompt you to buy a new one sooner. Krohler do it too. Please ignore that sticker.



You can drain the oil via the dipstick, just be sure to tip with the spark plug or air filter up. You can suck the oil out through the dipstick, something like this -

Most dealers have the dipsticks for "sealed" transmissions in their tool rooms. We had some at VW. You can even find lengths online to make your own for DIY purposes. Usually. Transmissions tha5 use orifice tubes like the DSG are another story. I just pay to have my transmissions serviced. It's infrequent enough that I'm ok with that. But once I finally get a Quick Jack, even that may stop.

Couple of things I've come across with these engines -

1. Inspect, clean or replace the air filter often. From what I have seen, they plug up very quickly. They are a very basic paper cartridge which I believe can't be cleaned out like the older oiled foam filters. They aren't all that expensive, so I keep a couple of hand to swap as needed. I also recommend having the foam pre-filter sock, which can be cleaned and extends the life of the paper cartridge. And finally, make sure to buy genuine here, the last thing you want is a cheap Amazon filter not sealing properly and dusting the engine.

P/N - 593260 (filter) & 798452 (pre-filter)


2. Stick with the mineral SAE30 oil for the first 15 - 20 hours, then swap to 10W-30 synthetic/semi-synthetic from then onwards. The old mono-grade stuff is good for running in, but is not really needed on the new OHV engines. Briggs always specified SAE30 to account for the loose tolerances on their older flat-head engines.









3. Oil capacity is 440ml or 15-oz. Considering the whole no oil change thing, that oil capacity is less than the older side-vales, which was 600ml / 20-oz. That means you have less leeway, most mower owners would never check the oil, let alone top it up or actually change it.

4. Spark plug is Champion RC12YC or NGK BCPR5ES, gapped to 0.76mm.





5. You can bump the top speed of the engine to improve performance. I've done this on all of my 4-strokes, mainly because the factory setting is just too low, usually about 2800 - 2900 rpm. I aim for 3600 - 3800 rpm, which is where older mower engines used to sit. The only reason why they do this is to limit exhaust and noise emissions.







To adjust the governor on the new OHV engines, there is a bendable tab just behind the air filter housing. The following video shows how to do it, even though it shows the smaller 125cc version, the adjustments are the same. If you don't have a tacho, just be careful not to go too far, you will hear what sounds about right.


Mine after a little "tune up", as you can hear, it makes the engine sound like its actually doing something..............................................

I will look into the governor adjustment. My old worn-out mower felt more powerful despite this new one's claiming one additional HP. That must be why.

I'm guessing your old mower had the 190cc (Quantum) flat head. What they lacked in outright power, they made up for it with torque.

Think of it like comparing a Ford Coyote DOHC 5.0 V8 compared to a GM 6.2 pushrod OHV V8. While both produce similar power numbers, they go about it very differently. The Ford is like the latest 163cc OHV Briggs, as in using a superior valve train to produce its power from a smaller capacity, but at the expense of torque. The older 190cc Briggs flat-head is like the GM V8, as overcoming its older valve train by having a larger capacity. One has to work hard, the other just lugs along.

So, what would having the best of both worlds be, as in large capacity AND the superior valvetrain? Oooo, now that would be the 190cc OHV 850-Series Briggs. Think of this being the glorious Mercedes-AMG 6.2 naturally aspirated V8. Big capacity for torque, but modern in every way to make the power too. The BEST push mower engine on the market today!

Well an engine swap seems super simple in a mower, so maybe I'll get a 600cc Predator engine from Harbor Frieght

I ordered these because they were listed as being red but ended up more of a fluro orange. I also ordered them because of the name, Adidas Run Falcon. I actually wore them today because my others are still wet from washing.

These ones are Pegusus GoreTex, which are semi-waterproof and well suited to car washing.

I was a big Merrell Moab GTX fan, but they've become so uncomfortable I can't wear them regularly, I bought some Skechers which were very comfortable, but I wore the tread smooth in 4 months. So I got some Adidas to replace them, they're going great at 3 months but they're no good in all the rain we've been getting, now I've gone back to some old Merrell Tactical boots I bought years ago.

It's weird, but it seems like my feet have grown a size bigger in the last 12 months.

The Tasmanian government has brought in a 10 cents per plastic bottle for recycling ♻️.

24x500ml bottle water was $7 Now I'm paying $11 talk about a load of shit
I recycle ♻️ i do my bit but now, i have to collect and drive
Into town if i want to see anything back of my extra money spent.

They should keep the prices the same and use this to motivate people
to make a little pocket money without hurting the end consumer.
