Hello all, I've been hibernating this winter and got out of detailing mode until the weather gets a little better.

Just wanted to share another one of my hobbies which is hot rodding flashlights.
I spent 18 years in the sign business working in a lot of attics and storefront soffits which had me constantly looking for the Holy Grail of flashlights. I'm not alone, the Candle Power Forums have 7000+ active members.

This modification takes an ordinary 2D Maglite and increases the output to the point that it will light paper on fire and set marshmallows ablaze :)

It called a Mag623 mod after the bulb (Osram 64623) but my youngest son calls this one the "Blue Flame"

It's taken awhile to get everything together, but I'm very pleased with the results.

Specs are:

MagLite 2D host, grooved, finned, patterned and tri-bore machined
15.6v custom NiMH battery pack
Soft-start, multi-level incan driver socket/switch
100w Osram halogen bulb (2 million candlepower spotlights use 35 to 50w bulbs)
Borofloat glass lens
Cammed aluminum LOP (light orange peel finish) reflector

On high, it provides daylight type illumination and shuts off street lights lol

Yes, it'll burn right through orange peel :D

I built it for personal use, but I like to build them....

thats freaking awesome, you think its possible to make one for paint swirl detection like the xenon brinkmann's that a lot folks here use.

I'm not a guy who goes camping but if i did that lite would be a must have item...

btw,i read where trhland was a big flashlite collector as well...he's gonna love this thread

Thanks!

I carry a Fenix P1D Q5 in my pocket everyday, great lights

how much does it cost to make or buy one?
and if it starts paper on fire how safe is it?
how long do the batteries last?

I have a Fenix P3D Black Premium Q5, wich is great !!

That is ONE bright light! I've never thought about modifying a flashlight, but it sounds like fun.

I like the Pelican flashlights for absolute ruggedness and lifetime warranty (just like their cases). I had a Pelican case break after 22 years of use and they replaced it free...now that's a warranty!

Bare bones, no frills in the $200-$250 range
As pictured with custom machine work and the multi-level switch...almost double that.

and if it starts paper on fire how safe is it?

It's as safe as matches, not for kids.

how long do the batteries last?

At full brightness 8-10 minutes. Thats the nice thing about the multi-level driver/switch, you can run it at 30% brightness for presumably 30 minutes. On low (30%) it's still roughly 20 times brighter than a stock MagLite.

Keep in mind this uses a 100w bulb whereas a regular 3D MagLite uses a 4-6w bulb.
