Does anyone use just Mother's products?

I remember someone on this or another forum who argued the fact that they were able to get their truck just as clean, shinny and protected using solely Mother's products as compared to boutique products. Does anyone do that? If yes, what would you recommend as a good starter list?

Thanks,
Howard

Anyone who is worth their salt will tell you it's all about Process more than product.

Does 'botique' product help? It can, certainly. Do you need it to obtain good results? No.

Absolutely correct,if your paint is not prepped right (clay ,polish ,etc) no expensive wax can bring the real beauty to the surface.

You could use exclusively Mother's products and produce a deep, defect-free shine.

IMHO, you're looking at 50+% more time investment to do so, though, and if you parked that truck next to one done with the "trendy" products, a trained eye could tell a difference but the average person could not.

Here is my recommendations if you want to use Mothers.

1. Ultimate Wax System - best on solid dark colors. Nice on black to get that carnauba look
2. Reflections and Top Coat - Has a classy reflective look but can mute metallics. Reflections by itself will darken paints slightly but Top Coat seems to restore it.
3. FX - best for metallic paints if you want the flakes to pop

:iagree:

There is some suptle differences in the look of higher end products but, without a doubt, the reason I pay the premium in most cases is the ease of use and time savings.

Another thing to consider when deciding if a "boutique" product is worth the cost is safety (for you, the environment, and your vehicle). What I mean is... some OTC stuff (I'm not sure about Mothers) use pretty harsh chemicals, also consider, the safety margin in preventing swirls using a "good" shampoo over a inferior product... same for towels, applicators, etc.

All that said, the correlation between $$$ and quality isn't always telling. There are many low cost products that in my opinion are better than many of the higher priced ones. The Duragloss Line is the best example of this IMO.

It would be interesting to do a test where you detail some cars and see if anyone could name the product being used especially from pictures even if you identified the products.

That would be like tasting a wine and being able to guess the name of the person whose feet squashed the grapes. With so many product lines out there, and so many products in each line, how could anyone pull it off? Unless you knew the detailer and knew what he had in his arsenal. Might be able to guess then.

I like some Mother's stuff but not others. I like the billet metail polish but cant stand the Back to Black. I havent used the paint products so have no opinion there. But its about the work, not always the product, as was said already.

If you use B2B as a dressing you won't like it. But if you use it as intended, aka a restorer which needs more hits and meticuluos massage, it will work good.

Mothers products rival high-end boutique lines.

Nothing wrong with Mothers products, as is nothing wrong with Meguiars products. Turtle Platinum line is good . Some people like Eagle One Nano. Useing boutique products is a personal choice.

My comment was a rhetorical comment. As someone said earlier, if you prep the paint properly and using many alternatives available here at AG, your vehicle will still stand out in the parking lot.

agreed! mothers has some excellent products, their utra-soft polishing (edgeless) and quick detailing towels are top notch and are every bit as nice as the boutiques (if not even better). the FX spray wax is also pretty nice as well. i've been wanting to try the california gold spray wax, but have yet to see it available OTC anywhere...

absolutely a great thread. esp for someone new like myself new to detailing. i was almost ashamed or something to ask about any of the otc brands that have been around forever and you can get at every big chain store

I will use Meguiar's #26 found in all the major autoparts stores. It's a great carnuba wax. I need more of it by the way.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So personal preference does reign true. There are a lot of great products on the market today. Personally, I like Meguiars and their products. The main thing, to quote a friend, is to find something you like to use, and use it often.

Sorry. Wasnt trying to offend. I was trying to be funny and thought I accomplished that. Yep, I agree with the paint prep. Pretty much every company I've tried makes something I like to use. Mothers is no exception.
