How much for the wax!?!?!!

Hi all,
I have been wandering around various forums for a while now and have picked up much knowledge from here (my forum home base) and Autopia. Thank you all for getting me to the "next step" in care care. My 2005 Burnt Copper Metallic Mazda has never shone so bright. Pics and a write up on a very neglected 2002 F150 soon to come. But, I digress.

The reason for this post is about "beauty" waxes. There seem to be a lot of people in love with very expensive wax. Expensive to me is $60.00 and up. Is there really that big a visual difference between Supernatural ($200.00), Fuzion ($175.00), Swissvax Divinity ($2,500.00!!) and say; P21S Concourse or DP Max Wax and many, many others? What I mean is, do you spend that kind of money on high dollar waxes because you know what is on there. Or, am I missing something in the world? Are there others out there getting into brawls over what made a car shiney or deep or wet or a nice combo?

Do you acctually get people asking if was Fuzion, etc. that you used on your car? Help me to understand? How does the spouse react to. "Honey I just a great deal on some Onyx, only $800.00 for 8 oz's!!" I can see the spouse saying, "Hrmmm, good for you. MMMMMM, smells good, smells like alimony."
Now don't get me wrong I understand spending a lot on money on detailing, but on many different products, cleaners, brushes and other assorted accoutrements. Maybe i'm cheap. Maybe my addiction to detailing hasn't hit the "John Belushi" level of addiction, yet! I know it isn't the price of Carnuba Wax that makes these waxes expensive, doing an online check top quality Brazillian T1 Carnuba (25kilo pack of flake) goes for less than $50.00

I guess I just don't get it, yet.

Zymol Solaris wax is over $50,000.00. Its Swissvax Divine not Divinity, btw.

:iagree: ( except I dont use the 1.99 Turtle wax at the dollar store either )

Havent ever spent more than $ 20 for a wax and been happy with it ! ( all Meguiars for now )
 
There is a difference between a 20 dollar wax and a 70 dollar wax and you can tell.

Well you can use the $ 70 wax ..... I prefer to use Meguiars and others at $ 20. Meguiars lasts over 4 mths on my truck just fine and still charge $ 100 for a full detail !

Just like buying a BMW im sure is better than a Chevy, but I will take my American made Chevy anyday ! :buffing:
 
Depending on the color of the car, there is a very distinct look the wax will give you for different needs.

Black, yellow, and reds: Souveran and Supernatural would definately be worth it.

Flake: DP Maxwax will make the flake pop like mad and give a great reflection.

etc...
 
Let's not forget that the final result of any wax and/or sealant is in direct proportion to the paint prep prior to it's application. A $10 or $20 wax on top of a near perfectly prepped paint surface will always look better than a $100 or even a $2500 wax over a swirled and marred surface.

While certain waxes definitely look better on some colors, the final look of an LSP is still a very subjective and personal matter.

And let's be honest. how many of you could look at several vehicles, side by side, all detailed and prepped to AG standards and tell which one had which wax on it?
 
This has been argued over at Detailing World I think or some other forum. Someone did a test with all different types of waxes on the exact same style car (color, model, etc), with the same prep work done on each. Most people couldn't tell the difference between Swissvax and Collinite. So what's that tell you?

I have Fuzion, DP Maxwax, and Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant. Each do have a characteristic to each that I like, but at the end of the day the devil is really in the details (or prep in this instance).

As an example, on Autopia, look up a member Brandon1 he's done a bunch of details, and even used Turtle Wax as his LSP, and it ends up looking great.
 
Estate Waxes often take on the pricing of 100.00 or more ... and yes there are some light differences and nuiances to them. What I have seen is the more you spend the more you suggest to others that you see in difference. I personally think Fuzion looks just as nice as a certain 300.00-500.00 wax from two "other" companies and suspect no one else could tell the difference, but those owners will swear to it.

I agree with you there Killr i think the more they spend on the wax they convince themselves it looks better.
 
I sense a wax war.

Either Way, The prep work is the most important IMO and thats what blows the customer away.

But I usually just finish off my details with two coats of M21 or M20.
 
I have Souveran, Fuzion, Meg's #21 2.0, and have sampled Natty's Blue not to mention I still have a bottle of Meg's Gold Class laying around. Souveran and Fuzion were worth some of the price alone because of the ease of use! I do feel that they both have their own distinct look on various colors, but honestly I don't think I will buy them again unless they are on sale. I can just about guarantee you that most cars that get detailed from me or anyone else for that matter, the actual owner of the car would not be able to tell the difference between Gold Class or Souveran. There may be a few that can tell, but most will not know any difference.
 
Using Adam's paste wax on my truck versus DP Max Wax I can tell the Adam's has a much deeper and more reflective shine, but costs twice as much (70 dollars). Max is what I use on customers cars unless they want to pay for an upgrade.
 
Thank you everyone for the insight. I figured it was a personal preference. It's all subjective and prep is the crucial step.
