Question about counterweights?

I just received my XP yesterday. I noticed on the counterweight it say "Use only with 5 inch pad"

I want to use my 3.5" pads, so do I need to take this counterweight off? The instructions don't tell me lol.

No, leave it on. If you use 6" pads and larger, use the 6" counter weight.

never found a difference in the original PC using either counterweight. I know it was suggested, but years later still working like a charm too.

Nor have I Killr, but a guy at a pc repair shop said if you use the wrong counter weight it will put added stress on the shaft and bearing and in the long run will cause pre-mature failure. PC was made for sandpaper and not a heavier foam pad so dunno.

Likewise. Have used the same counterweight with all pads with no issues or significant different feel in the performance.

I plan on buying a 3.5" and a 6" LC BP for my friend's new Griot polisher. I assume I need to get a counterweight for the 6", but I don't see any counterweights available for the 3.5". What's the story there?

I have both counterweights and have found no difference between the two using pads from 3" to 6.5"

Using a larger counterweight for larger pads won't make a big difference in performance, but it will make a difference in the longevity of the motor.

I agree. It would be nice if Meghan or Mike would get PC to answer this question once and for all. Should we be changing counter weights with different size bp and pads.

I'm one of those people that took that warning a little to seriously. Many years ago when first got my PCs I bought one with each wgt. on it so I didn't have change them when switching pads sizes. In the long run I guess it wasn't to bright on my part.

Is it still running? You may have done the right thing. There has been a few shafts breaking lately.

I bought my 7424 locally off Craigslist. Guy said he had bought a counterweight to use with 6.5in pads. Would I need to find a replacement factory piece to use with 4" pads?

Haven't noticed any difference between the 5" and 6" cw, but I would use the smaller weight for the 4" pads. BTW welcome to the forum.

I just got mine yesterday as well. Mine was part of a kit that came with 6.5" pads; however I did not get a 6" counter weight (Whats up with that) Shouldn't I have gotten the proper counterweight to use with the pads that came with the kit?

Yeah, that's my problem. He didn't have the factory weight.

Guess it's time for me to do some search for the factory part.
