I just moved back to my hometown that i left 5 years ago and moved down to the carolina's im thinking of starting up a shop here there is not really alot of options for people to get a decent detail job done around here. when i was in the carolina's i had a mobile detail operation that was pretty sucessfull with the boats and cars. but now i will have to switch alot of things to battle the harsh weather conditions whe get around here

Get a shop with 1 or 2 Garage bays. Get a pressure washer with a heater for the winter. I played hockey in Boston last year and I worked at a shop and they had one of these Electric Motor Diesel Burner Hot Water Power Washers
It worked great in the winter. They had one bay set up for washing and they seperated it from the other bay with tarps to keep the water from getting everywhere. You can try to find a bay with a drain that will help alot.

If you stay open year round you will get alot of buisness because people need to wash the cars in the winter to get all the salt off because that ruins paint. I drove from ON,Canada back to Florida and the salt was on the car 2 days and it was a pain to wash.

I had a friend with a 2 bay shop and some kind of water recovery system under the floor. There was a large square drain in the middle of the shop and after washing a car they could use a squeegee to push all the water off the floor and into the drain.

I really made washing a car nice as it was out of the sun in the summer and out of cold in the winter.

Where abouts in Upstate NY? I live in the Finger Lakes region which is in the heart of Saltyroadsville. I only live about 3 miles from my work. But, the local town highway dept. happens to be right in the middle of that commute. So all of the trucks pulling in and out of the "town barns" sprays a nice thick coat of crap right where I drive every day...

Man, I just depressed myself thinking about how soon they may start salting.

Good luck with the detailing business!

i have found a place with 1 bay heater included 550 a month the footer is sloped into a middle drain..Would i be able to get out of having to heat my water or is that a must?

They had the water heater because the bay was open. But in the winter the tap/hose water get pretty cold. Working with heater water lets say to about 70 degress would probably help removing all the salt/road grim. Im not 100% sure though.

i was thinking a nice low psi pressure washer would do the trick. but if not what kind of prices am i looking at for a heated water system..(to bad my mytee dident come with a hose attachment:(
