Can you Believe this is a Hyundai

Chicago-based customization firm Toca has revealed a twin-turbo, 600 hp performance version of Hyundai's Genesis sedan dubbed "Steel Phoenix" ahead of SEMA in Las Vegas next month.

Hyundai and Toca are chasing German “super sedans” like the BMW M5 and Mercedes E63 AMG with the Steel Phoenix, so the car’s engine has been given a significant power boost. The concept is powered by a thoroughly reworked version of Hyundai’s 5.0-liter “Tau” V8, which produces 600 hp (447 kW) thanks to a bespoke Garrett twin-turbo setup. Toca’s work extends well beyond just bolting two turbos onto the Genesis’ engine. Under the bonnet, the Steel Phoenix has been fitted with two Garret intercoolers, wastegates and boost control valves from TiAL and a custom oil cooling system from Earl’s Performance. The upgraded engine breathes through an ARK Performance twin exhaust system.

To deal with all that extra power, Toca has upgraded the Genesis’ chassis and braking systems. The Steel Phoenix is fitted with an AirREX air suspension system that lowers the car’s ride height for a better presence on the road, and front brakes have been upgraded to 380-mm (15-inch) discs clamped by 8-piston forged calipers. Rear brakes are 356-mm (14-inch) discs and 6-piston forged calipers.

21-inch wheels wrapped in Toyo Proxes T1R tires measuring 255/30 up front and 295/25 at the rear round out the performance package. As well as providing good grip, the wheel and tire package complement the car’s wide bodykit and lowered stance. A custom metallic grey paint mix gives puts the "steel" in "Steel Phoenix" package.

On the inside, Toca’s changes include contrast white stitching on the Hyundai’s black leather seats, carbon fiber trim and a Rockford Fosgate stereo system, which takes advantage of a new trunk screen that shows off the car’s audio and air-suspension hardware. Toca has also added its logo to the headrests on the Steel Phoenix’s seats.

The Steel Phoenix Genesis will be on display at SEMA, which runs from 4-7 November. Gizmag will be on the ground covering all the action.

Wife just got new 2015 Sonata Limited last weekend. It's an awesome car for the money. She's owned nothing but Nissans and four generations of Altimas. This car outclasses the 2015 Altima SL easily. It has every gizmo imaginable. Full leather interior, heated and COOLED front seats which is awesome for down here in Florida. Full length moon/sun roof, 2 postion driver selectable seat automatically adjusts at start up, 8" nav/infotainment system, split screen feature, shows the exact screen that's on your ipod and controls all ipod functions through vehicle steering wheel and stereo. 400 watt Infinity stereo system with HD radio and a 4" LCD drive center dash info system LED drl's. HID headlights, rear back up camera, trunk opens automatically with proximity switch in your pocket. Awesome Pearl White Paint too. And it drives really smooth too. Amazing car for the money. They've come a long wayyyyyyy.

Very nice car

Thanks, she loves it. It's her first non Nissan, it took a little convincing but once she took a test drive it was a no brainer for her. We rented a 2014 Altima at Thanksgiving and drove it to North Carolina so she got a really fair comparison.

Plus it's 56% US made components including engine and transmission and assembled in Montgomery, Alabama.

I will stick with American iron, er plastic. Trans Am ws6 & Firehawk for me. North American.

Gave it the treatment for her, she detailed the interior :dblthumb2:

I forgot to ask you a couple questions. I have a 2007 Sonata and of course it has been perfect, but no comparison to this new version. I notice you have a pano roof. How cool do you think that will keep you in the Florida sun during summer? I ask because I worry about that myself living here in Texas. Secondly, how cool are the front seats? Some cars don't really cool and just send out air whereas others, such as Lincoln, seem to somehow divert air conditioned air to the seats. What does the Sonata do in this regard?

My son has Genesis Coupe 3.6? R Spec. I walked the Hyundai lot a few times when he was looking. Unbelievable how far they have come. Everything about them seems very high quality. Looks like really nice leather.
I remember when Hyundais and Yugos first started coming into the country. They weren't even taken seriously. My how times change!

The sun roof has a full length automatically retracted cover. This time of year the sun is low so it's not bad, the ac cranks so no problem there. The seats seem to cool quickly, again it's not hot yet so will wait to see full summer heat. Also with the Bluelink system you can start it automatically so it will be cool anyway by the time you hop in. They've really made a lot of improvements, even over the last generation. It's really solidly built, and as you know you can't beat the warranty.

That's hilarious, my thoughts too. My wife and I started dating in 1988 and we always used to laugh at Yugos and Hyundai Excels! And of course the Chrylser Iaccoca K Car!!

Yugo went the way everyone thought both would go. The wind actually blew a Yugo off the Mackinac bridge in Michigan lol I had heard that story several times. Verified it before I posted it lmao

That's wild!

This was in the showroom, 2015 Genesis, and this isn't even the top of the line Genesis. I kept thinking how I'd like to polish that paint out, it's a great color and really brings out it's lines.

One of my neighbors father bought one of those.mdark gray. Got in a pretty bad accident within a month. Not bad enough to total it though. They defiantly got it right when they built that one too. My sons Lexus IS close to that color. As soon as the car can sit still long enough we're going to polish that one. Those back seats recline if I'm not mistaken.

I also own Genesis 2015, and used to have 2012 Sonata 2.0T Limited
It's simply the best car I ever drive, the Ultimate edition is just pure joy to drive.
This was the one of the main reason I wanted to preserve the cars paint same as I bought it , and during past few months I have learned so much, thanks to you all guys , my brand new car will look fresh and shiny.

I drove a rental Sonata for 2 week while on business in NYC and I tried to beat the breaks off that thing. Great on gas and handles nicely, I was impressed!!!

I'll tell you what, in the mid-size 4 door market, Hyundai is making noise. I'd be hard pressed to buy anything other for the money.

The Genesis back seats doesn't recline unfortunately, Sonata does.
Genesis has small opening to trunk compartment trough that middle elbow console.

I thought they did in that one also. Seems like if your going to use something like that in one of your cars it would be the top end car???
