Rotary only??? 3M Ultrafina

What you heard about paint swelling was about Menzerna polishes. This is what got the IPA craze going, rightfully so, so you can see the true finish.

I feel 85rd works a lot better and looks a lot better with a da than UF does.

A4, I no you are trying to discredit. It is that UF doesn't like when the finish isn't almost perfect, it will not take out much and will just fill. On the other hand if you barely have any holograms it will make you proud. I am in no way downing UF because it is my favorite final polish, but in the rare cases that it doesn't work I will use Scholls S40.

I have used Ultrafina with the PC-XP without any adverse effects. The reason why a rotary is "needed" for Ultrafina is because the abrasives need both heat and friction in order to diminish properly. With the DA, it will probably not break down the diminishing abrasives quickly enough. Not that it is really an issue anyway, because Ultrafina is already very very fine. Even if it isn't broken down completely, the paint would still look more refined than what you have originally started. Breaking it down further simply refine it even more.

In my opinion, the PO85RD was [probably] also designed to be a rotary-only polish as well. But because many people have reported positive results with the product using a DA, and probably due to marketing reasons, Menzerna decided not to put a "rotary-only" label on it. I find that PO85RD produces much better results and works more quickly with the rotary.

I don't see why one would not use the rotary with products such as Ultrafina or PO85RD. With a soft jeweling or finishing pad, these ultra fine polishes are incapable of any damage even at their ideal operating speeds, which is around 1500-1700rpm. I deliberately ran the finishing pad and Ultrafina around the corner at the fender with the rotary without any pressure (ideal application of ultra fine polishes). It barely removed any clear coat.

I haven't read anything about that either, I'd really like to see some threads with that info. Seems like some crucial knowledge that would help in achieving a flawless finish.

I hope you meant "I know you aren't trying to discredit" :o

I've definitely learned a lot in the last couple days. Today we started damp sanding a repainted panel on my friends black Acura. Trying to use the same pad/product combo's that worked so well on the BMW did not produce even remotely similar results. The Power Gloss finished pretty rough and Ultrafine not only had a tough time cleaning up after PG, it didn't finish to the high gloss/clarity I was expecting. We didn't get as far as we hoped and will be trying to dial in something that works tomorrow. Thanks for any advice, I'm always listening.

Whoops, you are correct. It should have said, I know you are not trying to discredit."

Thanks for the correction Dana it was a vague memory. i had to take a big break from detailing and I kinda fell out of touch with the boards and mixed up my information.

Can someone hook me up with a link to a thread that discusses this "paint swelling"? TIA

Thanks Dana, I think I'm going to buy a cheap rotary soon. I want to play with Ultrafine and a test panel. It's funny how I went from working on one car thinking "Wow! Power Gloss and Ultrafine easily produce flawless results" to the next car and getting the polar opposite. All the expert advice of "do a test section" and "you have to try it and see what works for you" is well founded. Thanks to all!
