Well, finally got around to trying some products on my wife's 2000 Pontiac Trans Am (Black). Its not in bad shape, just some light swirls, and some chips on the car.

I decided to pick up the Meguiars products locally and give them a shot since my cash is a little tied up in my car at the moment. Anyway, here is the process i used:

All Meguiars by hand (Will buy a 7424XP when my car is up and running again):

Whole car:
Ultimate QD (Car didnt even look dirty really)
Smooth Surface Clay Bar w/QD

Where needed:
Gold Class cleaner wax (Removed some mouldings, had a little buildup)

Tried on the fender/hood:
Scratch X 2.0
NXT 2.0

Now heres where my question is. I ran a piece of painters tape down the middle of my front fender, so i could see my results. Did the QD, Claybar, Scratch X, then the NXT 2.0. Let it dry, and buffed it off with microfiber. Once that was done, the fine scratches were NOTICEABLY reduced, but Im hard pressed to see a difference in shine? Now i know my vision isnt the greatest (Damn cataracts) but shouldnt there be a pretty noticable difference since the car hasnt really been waxed in quite a while?

BTW, im a total newb to serious paint care so all tips/suggestions would be GREAT! My first adventure was a silver car Trans Am and i Zaino'd the hell out of it, for protection mainly. Also, my car is Sunset Orange metallic, so i finished the Zaino on it, and have now moved on to the black. Im also doing as much reading on here as i can. Thanks.

Get it polished out with a machine and you should see a big difference. Wax alone isn't going to make a huge difference unless the paint under it has been corrected.

^correct. To be honest, wax doesn't little in terms of "shine" if they foundation (paint) is poor. You will notice a bigger difference when you polish it than when you wax it.

If your black car is anything like mine you'll need to follow up with a finishing polish. After using Meg's UC on a white LC pad with my PC, I used M205 on a white pad, and then followed that up with 85rd on a gray pad. Washed the car, put a couple coats of Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint Sealant, topped it with some Fuzion, and got one hell of a shine for my efforts. I used Nxt 2.0 and that gave me a great shine as well. Use some spray wax to maintain the protection you get with the NXT 2.0. That should do you well!

Both of these statements are absolutely correct!
(Side note): Scratch X is pretty aggressive and while it may help to remove lighter scratches and lighter swirls, it will also cuase hazing (especially noticable on dark colrs). This hazing must be polished out with a less aggressive "finishing" polish to add gloss. For the best results save up and go with a machine polisher. Get a combo polish like 105/205. 105/205 is a great bang for the buck (and works awesome, it's like having many polishes in one combo)...

after the scratch-x, you should have used color-x to further polish the paint before waxing it. maybe skip the nxt, as this will remove (?) the polish. just use megs. gold wax.

keep reading and save up for the pc, it changed my whole paint care world.
