Correct Dwayne since all of my work is done under a canopy, for now. If the vehicle is not under the canopy, it will be sitting under some very bright sun light.
 
Q: What is a paint sealant?

A: Paint sealants are man made polymer based products which form a bond with the paint. When these open linked polymer molecules join together they form an extremely durable mesh that provides a bright reflective surface which accurately represents the true color of the paintwork beneath it. While sealants are more durable than waxes they do not typically provide the depth and wet characteristics associated with a carnauba wax

The above red text (from the FAQ section of my site) explains how sealants cure(cross link). The cross linking of the open linked polymer molecules is what gives the increased durability when compared to a traditional wax.

In order for the cross linking to properly occur, the surface of the paint must be as clean as possible as to not interfere with the cross linking process.

If you are putting on the wax 1st and then the sealant, the wax will interfere with the cross linking process and you will not get the durability the sealant was designed to provide.

This is basic fact that is adhered to in the detailing community....

I charge the same price whether it's Turtle Wax, NXT, Zaino, Fuzion, or DJ Supernatural. I simply don't like the idea of up-selling a high dollar wax or sealant. Just feels wrong to me for some reason. :dunno:


The only time I would consider charging more is if they wanted a sealant topped with a nuba as it's an extra step for me.

I use a paint sealant by default. Personal favorite are the spray and walk away type, like UPGP, Opti-Seal or DJ RMT (I hardly ever use DJ RMT though (not sure why))
 
Well, so much for being able to place the sealant on the GL 550 today. They are burning sugar canes somewhere, so, it's getting all over the Mercedes. Also, the wind is Southeast winds 25 to 30 mph. ugh.... I will go to my brothers house this weekend since they will be down on South Padre Island.

I also spoke to the folks at Optimum today and advised them that I was going to do one side of my Mazda with MaxWax and Opti-Seal. One the other side, I was going to use Opti-Seal, let stand for over 30 minutes then us Max Wax. David liked the idea and is looking forward to seeing that one as well. My Mazda might be my Sunday project.
 
i'm looking forward to the results of this. i have to think the sealant over wax will breakdown fast, within a couple of weeks. the sealant under the wax, should last like a sealant is supposed to, like 3 to 6 months. cant wait.

srhtx, thanks for doing this. i know it will be a pain, and take some time, but it will be great for all to see.

i misunderstood the question. i thought you guys were saying you don't charge for sealant. like if i was gonna do my daughters car, i would wash, clay, wash, polish ( 1 step or 2 step depends how bad) then seal, then wax. if she were a customer i would do the same if that's what they wanted. the seal step would cost. if they just want a wash and wax, that's what they would get. if they want a long lasting shiny like wax look, sealant, they would have to pay. no more than a wax coat, but i would defnately charge them. that's what i would do. i see you are saying you would not charge them any more than if you put a coat of wax on, i can see that. it's not that hard. just takes some cure time.

Thanks Mate!! I have already spoken with the CEO with Optimum Polymer Technologies, Inc.. He will be getting in touch with Anthony, with Concours Auto Salon in San Antonio, TX, who will provide more information how and why the designed Opti-Seal.

As for the Mercedes Benz GL 550, I want to get the exterior done early Friday morning IF the wind is nice and calm with no Sugar Cane flying everywhere up in the sky. ugh......
 
Let me bump back a little bit. As for the rates, I do not have different levels of detailing service that I offer. Yes. I have a price sheet and it only shows a one step process or a two step process. The exterior service does not even show what products that I use. I'm trying to only have one or two products for vehicles paint work. Interior work, I charge $30.00/hr. Down here in the Deep South, you will not get much for detailing vehicles since the Rio Grande Valley sits right across the river from Mexico where these two counties are the two worst counties in the US financially. Not to mention we are just north of the drug cartels.

I detail vehicles here at my moms house where is no space in the 2 car garage to even park one vehicle inside it. I will be going to a public place in the near future. I just can't talk about it at this time.

lol about the drug cartel being so close, should be great business for you. Drug dealers in Florida have some ridiculously nice cars...you should take advantage of that.

Uh the way things are going down in his area I wouldn't recommend that. Remember these are not just drug dealers he has to put up with, its a cartel in a war that kills for no reason. Nothing LOL about that.

Anyway, I think I may try this same test on the wifes car and see what happens.
 
My mistake. Didn't realize it was that kinda crap, figured it was just the usual drug dealer with expensive rims and crazy paint I see rolling around tampa bay all the time. I'm used to seeing chameleon paint jobs with 22 inch TIS rims and swirl marks riding around so I figured it was the same elsewhere.
 
Wait. The drug Cartels are in Mexico. People really do not drive from Texas into Mexico any more. Also, there was a major Governmental meeting in McAllen, TX yesterday talking about the cartels. The Government people in DC, Austin and other places do not know what is going on unless they are able to find out things 1st hand.

btw - Yes. many people have 20" + rims on thier vehicles that look like crap. People down here can't afford custom paint jobs like you are mentioning in the Tampa area. LOL.... The people who are selling rims are making a killing on interest rates since the people have to get loans for them. There are loan places, pawn shops and everything else everywhere down here. Brownsville, Harlingen, Weslaco, McAllen, Rio Grande City, EVERYWHERE.

I'm a little confused now. :D

When I do any type of correction on a clients car the owner will get either a wax or sealant applied of their choice, which is included in the initial cost. The only time I would consider charging more is if they wanted both a sealant and a wax applied because it's an additional step. I personally don't like topping sealants with a wax.


What I was also saying is that I will not charge a customer more simply for applying a $200 wax vs. a $20 wax. ;)

I don't have a great deal of time to reply here.

Opti-Seal can be used over a wax through migration. I am not a chemist or a scientist nor did I formulate Opti-Seal BUT I have no reason to doubt Dr. G. either.

I am told the solvents within Opti-Seal are not of the type that will degrade wax but that it will lift, get underneath and then re-settle the wax.

The easy fix here though if doubt is still a concern is to clean, polish, WAX and then SEAL.

We spray Opti-Seal (Opti-Coat) on so there is no wiping or rubbing using our method. It's just allowed to evaporate exactly how it was designed.

Wow what are you using to allow you to spray and not wipe in the opti=seal? This amazes me i would think you would go through a ton more product

That is why Optimum is such a great product. I ust a good amount of Optimun stuff now.

By air gun. Yes you use more product but not a great deal more. It allows for better application and you're getting 100% of product on the paint. When using a towel or sponge you're losing some amount due to absorption.
