My wife purchased a new, black car. 10 minutes after leaving the dealership we noticed a large dent (golf ball size) on the roof. They fixed the dent and put touchup paint on the two large chips that were present.

Will the touchup paint be permanent? Any issues that may arise?

Feedback would be much appreciated.

How did they touch it up? Did they sand the area first before applying the paint? How did they apply the paint?

It all depends on how the repair was performed. If it was done correctly, then it will be permanent. If they didn't prep it properly, the paint won't adhere properly either. Painting is also like detailing, it's all about the prep work.

Thanks for the response. I honestly don't know. My wife dropped it off yesterday and picked it up this morning.

The dent is gone and there isn't evidence of it being there. However, after posting the original message, I used a QD and cleaned the area and looked at it more closely. There are a lot of scratches all around the area and the two chips look like they have, for lack of a better term, tar, caked into the chip marks. From the front of the vehicle, you can't notice it that much. From the side you can and if you get close you really can.

I would assume based on your description, this is how they did it, they did sand it down, put some body filler on it and just dabbed some black paint on it. Definitely no clear on that area because you said they appear as tar. That wouldn't be an acceptable fix for a brand new car, I would return it and expect a suitable repair if i were in your shoes.

Thanks. That's what I've decided on doing. It does look like it has a little clear on it, but the chip repair just looked "gobbed" on.

Is this a new or used car?

It's a new car.

Since it's a new car then they need to do more then touch up paint. Take it back to them and demand they fix it right.

For reference, how would they go that? Sand down to metal and go from there?

it's not necessary to sand it to metal. just sand the body filler they put on there to fill the dent with 400 until leveled with the surrounding area. they should also lightly sand the surrounding area a bit with 1000. spray some black paint 2-3 coats, wait for proper flash time between coats, 4-5 coats of clear. after 48 hours or so, sand it down with 2000 then 2500 to remove orange peel, then a few passes with a compound on a wool.

your instructions sound consistent with the info I read over at Automotivetouchup.com - except for the initial sanding instructions that's exactly what I did for results which impressed my local body shop. Well put!

Thanks! I've been more into painting before i jumped into machine polishing.
