Review-Optimum No Rinse

Great review Cee Dog. If I may ask a question; when you complete washing a panel do you wring out the MF cloth before tossing it into the rinse bucket? Or do you just toss it in fully wet?

It would seem that if you wrung out the cloth, the rinse water would stay "cleaner" longer. Opinions??

What sucked was the Cobra Chenille mitt. It is small and the elastic is rough and too snug for my large but not huge hands, I ended up cutting off the elastic and it works better but is still small.

Jim, I did the same think with my Cobras. Cut the whole band off after awhile. The elastic was getting brittle and starting to get hard and break. The Carrand Mitt is really nice but I didn't like the liner on the inside so I cut it out.

CEE DOG, nope it is a canvas top. The GT has a fabric (canvas) top, all the other models have a vinyl top.

Interesting! Any time I have ONR'd the Sky I just skipped the top. Didn't think it would work well. After thinking through this a couple times thanks to you it does actually sound like a fine idea. I can visualize it pulling the dirt right out of the fabric if using a long nap mf towel. Only question for me would be do the left over polymers build up and damage the threads in any way over time. Probably not, maybe they even add protection.... Hmmm

Thank you Cliff.

In the review (if I recall correctly) I just placed the dirty towel in the rinse bucket and rubbed it against itself and the grit guard to clean it. That is all you need to do. Now, last time I used ONR I actually left the garage door up and sprayed the towel out with the hose. I was feeling particularly ocd that day.

You are right that wringing it out would leave the rinse water cleaner but imo it takes about the same time to rinse the towel with a hose if you want. Imo wringing the towel could press grit in between the fabric where it won't rinse out as easy (probably just paranoia).

In all honesty any of these methods would be fine. The product is designed to not have to go to these lengths and it works as designed.

Great review CEE DOG. I was skeptical about using a rinseless wash but, your review and the product description on AG convinced me to try ONR. Will be included with my order being placed today.

I love using ONR but I'm always skeptical that it's not providing enough protection not to leave marring on some level, even if it's not obvious right off the bat. Do do love how I can wash a car in a fraction of the time, however.

Also I don't have my instructions in front of me, but are you using twice the recommended dosage?

Optimum No Rinse Wash & Shine: clay lubricant, optimum rinseless wash, no rinse car wash, optimum detailing products mentions using 1 oz per 2 gallons. (or 2 capfulls of the 32oz container cap)

You are correct, it should be one ounce per 2 gallons. Nice catch, must have had the number 2 stuck in my head.

I like using a MF mitt as the wash media. Works well and I have found them to be very safe in terms of not marring the paint.

No, I don't think it's paranoia Cee Dog, I think you have a valid point. I was wondering that myself - I think your idea of rinsing with a hose would be safer.

I have tried many, Mainly because I do an ONR wash of all but wheels 3 times more than a traditional wash. Best is the infamous Shamrock MF. You cant get plusher and if yours lints (mine dont) it doesnt at this stage. #2 is an Armor All (dont laugh) Chenille sponge I got at Big Lots for $4. It is well made and is about the size of the Cobra Bone. Next is the Pinnacle mitt but the nap is a little short. The Bone is great too! What sucked was the Cobra Chenille mitt. It is small and the elastic is rough and too snug for my large but not huge hands, I ended up cutting off the elastic and it works better but is still small. IMO it isnt up to Cobra Standards and should be revamped or canned. Its junk IME! LC Garage Sponges work OK too! I still wash my wheels the traditional way and do them first.

You know who has a nice Chenille mitt is Target. It is nice and big and cheap, I think $5.00. Try it out. I also have the cobra one and I do not like it, it is falling apart after 3 uses!!

Here is a question I asked Dr. David Ghodoussi of Optimum about the preferred media of use for ONR.

3A. - What are the finer points of reasoning on the ONR directions stating to use a MF towel rather then a wash mitt or other media? I prefer using an MF towel but would like to know the reasoning behind that being specifically stated.

The reason we recommend Microfiber towels is that there are anywhere from 50,000 pores per square inch for an average microfiber to 200,000 pores per square inch for a very plush Microfiber towel. These pores are active sites to trap dirt and remove it from the surface. Therefore you get a much greater cleaning and protecting effect from a microfiber towel than a wool mitt, etc. The towels we offer are on the upper end of the range I mentioned. The only draw back when using a Microfiber towel as the wash media is that it is hard to remove the dirt that is trapped by No Rinse from the towel unless you use a strong detergent like Power Clean.
Another great wash media is a soft sponge (minimum 80 PPI) that works great for washing with No Rinse. The advantages of sponge over Microfiber is that dirt particles can get adsorbed into the sponge and away from the surface. We are working with a foam manufacturer to develop a mitt that not only is safe and gentle for the automotive paint but also has good cleaning and dirt release properties. Once we complete all the testing and development, we will make this new foam mitt available to help make the wash process with Optimum No Rinse easier.

Nice Review! just got my bottle in today. Think I'm going to mix it with my regular wash. I will be using a good bit of this in the winter as per directed.

Cool. How long ago did you have this conversation with him?

Thank you! I usually mix some in my regular wash as well.

Actually I contacted him on his forum last night with a lot of questions about the new Opti Clean product. I took the opportunity to ask him this as well. When I checked today he had posted complete answers to all my questions. Take a look at the bottom of this page http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/product-reviews/28895-review-optimum-opti-clean-3.html of my Opti Clean review for a bunch more insight from the good Dr.

tried it out last night. Wow is all I can say and that doesn't justify this product. Not sure why I waited so long. Glad I got it now

Corey, awesome write up! Just what I need with the winters we have here in Kansas City.

Thanks for the effort you put into the write up.

It took me about six months to get to the point where I fully trust ONR. I started with the 32 oz bottle on my BMW 335i that was going back off lease in January. It worked great on the paint, but the typical BMW brake dust was almost impossible to clean without wheel cleaner (P21S) and a hose. Since getting an Infiniti G37, ONR is about all I use now. I just got a gallon in of the new formula last week and will be trying it out this weekend. The G37 brakes do not dust nearly as bad as the 335i, so I can even clean the wheels at the end (with a different mitt). I use a microfiber covered sponge that I purchased at Target. It releases the dirt really well and is very similar to The Bone. I do the initial drying wipe with a Guzzler, and the final buff with a nice plus Voom drying towel from Target.
