you can use a wheel sealant (DP or Poorboys) over painted and metal wheels for extra protection.

Yes, the best thing you can do is to simply keep them clean. Hit them with a pressure wash every so often when dirt and brake dust begin to build up. You can Get Mother's wheel products in many stores. They work great and won't break the bank.
