Mean People Suck!

Wow that is bad, it looks like someone sprayed paint remover aka aircraft remover on your paint. I used it to remove paint off my buddies bumper before we painted it. Whoever did this atleast knew a little bit about paint to know what would do that kind of damage and that makes them an even bigger ____head.

Actually, they'll take responsibility for that. You just have to talk some sense into them.

Indeed! They are liable for what happens on their property, and as long as the parking lot is on their property it's their responsibility to ensure that the vehicles parked there are safe. I've even heard a couple times where grocery stores have had to pay PDR bills for customers.

I did write a lengthy e-mail to our asset protection guy for our company letting him know that this sort of thing (vandalism in general) has happened way to much for our company NOT to do something about it. We'll see if anything gets done about it and I'm almost positive that they won't pay my deductable. Good thing is this won't raise my rates, according to the lady I talked to today from my insurance company, I just have to come up with the $$ after my wife and I get back from our anniversary trip. That shoudn't be to long though. The bad thing is I have to wait till Wednesday before I can perform any type of temporary cover up on it so the ins. adj. can document what they need to document.

Looking at those pics again just makes me sick. What the hell is wrong with the people that feel the need to destroy other peoples property... I wouldn't even do that to my worst enemy.

Some people just can't stand other people having nice things when they do not. Jealous degenerate trash. To some people, just having something nice outside is an invitation to vandalize it. This is the reason why people with a lot of money live in gated communities.

I feel for you, man. This sucks. Looks like aircraft paint remover was splashed on. I've used it before to prep a car for bodywork, so I know exactly what the damage looks like. The stuff is really thick so it can stay on the side of something long enough to strip it off. If you get it on your skin, it burns pretty bad unless you wash it off in 30 seconds. Even then, the skin is tender.
Looks like you need a motion activated security camera.
If you can, get it painted in acrylic urethane. It is much more durable, and has more gloss than enamel. Trouble is, it looks like your car is metallic, and you can't match metallic paint, so you will have to get the whole car repainted, if you want it to look right. You can get just the one panel painted and it will look ok, but it won't quite match, because the little metallic flakes lay down in a particular way each time it's painted.

Well I take it to the adjuster on WEDNESDAY, which means I have to wait a few more days before anything can be done to start protecting it. When I do get it to a body shop, what are some of the things I should request when they fix this, assuming they are going to have to paint the entire side and not just the spot affected. Obviously they can't match the fading on the rest of the vehicle. Will this be a good opportunity for me to get out the "orange peel" on that side of the truck if I ask for a certain way of applying the clear? And by a small chance they say they have to paint the ENTIRE truck, what should I be on the look out for? Again, can I ask for something to reduce/eliminate the "orange peel"? I havn't decided if I'm going to borrow the $$ from my dad who has graciously offered to loan it to me, or just wait till mid-October to do it myself. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Man that completely sux. I hope you called the police to report this as this is a crimminal act of vandalism. Since you've had trouble in the past (with the egg) I would seriously consider finding a small security camera (time laps or something) that you can hide in your truck or somewhere external. As others have stated, jeloiolsy can be a very powerful motivator for some crasy reason and it may not be completely random. At the very least you might be able to get someone fired and/or arrested if it's a co-worker. I really feel for you as I know this is quite unsettling. I wish you the best on getting it repaired promptly. //rick//

That's just the thing, the egg "incident" happened at home, where this happened at work, some 30 minutes away from my house. Not to mention they were 15 months apart. I don't think they were related. I have thought about the camera thing, but I would rather spend my money on modifications, detailing equipment, DNA guided bullets to hunt down these cowards. (remember that movie with Selleck and Simmons?)

There are two ways of dealing with orange peel. Prevention and sanding. If the painter is really skilled, he can shoot the paint and there will be little to no orange peel. If there is orange peel because the painter isn't that great, then the orange peel must be sanded out. Sanding means increased labor cost and that really drives the price up. Most shops view a certain amount of orange peel as acceptable and normal, as in how most factory paint is. I don't know what you mean by a certain way of applying the clear unless you mean to have them sand all of the orange peel out of the existing clear and then shooting more clear on top to have enough paint thickness for the long term. This is a necessity IMO, if you are going to be sanding the orange peel out of factory paint, because factory paint is so thin to begin with. Hey, it's already at the shop, so that is the time. However, It is going to cost probably 4-5 times as much to fix the orange peel on the whole car as it is to get a nice repaint of the damaged panel to either match the orange peel ness of the rest of the car, or to make that panel orange peel free.

Now, you COULD simply have them paint the car with the paint thick enough for YOU to sand and buff it yourself if you are up to it. They could either just paint it or paint it and give it a light buff to bring up the shine, and then you can sand and buff it out later. That would save you money I think. It will be a lot of work for you, but if you really want the car perfect, it might well be beyond your means to pay someone else to do a job that is as good as you want it when you could do it yourself. You can't paint, but you can sand and buff.
If they do paint the whole car from scratch, including the color coat, you have EVERYTHING to look out for. The more they do, the more flaws they can leave. Dealing with most body shops is tough. If you are a perfectionist, it can be extremely frustrating. I know, because I've been there. Oh, the anguish...:)
If you have the color coat redone, finding a great paint shop is all the more important. You need to see a few examples of their work, and don't assume that your car will turn out exceptionally well, just because you ask them to make it nice.
If it's just the clear that is redone, then just about any defect they leave can be sanded out by you.
It's a tough decision to make. If you want the color redone and you want perfection, you can't afford it. THAT would be a $30,000 paint job. Show car paint jobs are often $40,000. It's all the labor, and a lot of that is sanding between coats.
If you want to make the clear thicker so you can get rid of the orange peel, that would be an affordable option, though certainly more expensive than just repainting that one panel. Arguably, you could just have that one panel redone really nice, and then have the clear thickened later, but obviously, if you eventually want all of the metallic to match perfect, you must do the whole car at once, which brings us back to the pain of getting a phenomenal paint job at a price you can afford.

If I were you, I would probably have the one panel done and maybe put more clear on, and don't redo the entire car, because you will spend a lot more money doing the whole car, and it probably won't be perfect anyway.

Really sorry to see this man, actually angered me that someone would go that low and cowardly do this to your truck. Karma will catch up to that grimey scumbag rest assured.

The reason that someone does this escapes most of us because we don't think like that. Jealousy, envy, revenge to name just a few.

You mention that your truck was egged at home then paint stripper got it at work. To me, it sounds as if someones pissed at you, any idea why? If you repair the truck will it fall victim again?

It does look like someone poured a gel type paint stripper on the fender. I don't think it's any surprise that the panel needs to be refinished and any good body-shop should be able to complete this type of repair.

If you have vandalism insurance then use it, that's what it's there for. If you desire additional work like an entire paint job then you may have to shell out some cold hard cash too!

Well I'm leaving it up to the adjuster to let me know what it is going to take to get it right. They gurantee whoever they send me to for the repair. LOL, I'd love to get a $30k paint job for my $500 deductible! Im the MAN Not holding my breath, but one can dream. I just didn't know if I should ask for when I'm at the body shop AFTER the adjuster tells me what they will cover. I will ask about the additional coat of clear though to both the adjuster and body shop tech. We'll see what happens in a few days. Thanks for the feedback though!

What year is the vehicle and is it factory paint?

2006 and yes completly factory paint with the exception of the few touch-up areas I did with one of those "paint matching" pens. (ever notice how off those pens are)

I can't think of anyone that I pissed off, at least no one that knows what I drive. Hell I work retail in the toy industry, there is always that one parent that didn't get their way, or the store was out of that ONE toy their child HAS to have and it's MY fault, but I don't go on break to my truck very often, I usually stay in the store. I guess there is always that chance that someone saw me go to my vechicle, who knows. No one at work (to my knowledge) is pissed at me. As for the egg deal and this, I see it as completely unrelated as where I live, random things happen all the time on our block. We live in an older establishment, where most of the older people have passed on, and their kids', kids are now "running the streets". It's actually my mother-in-laws house that we bought from her (it's nice having a house paid off), but this area isn't the best for people with nice objects just sitting outside. But really, this sort of stuff is starting to happen everywhere, just not in areas like mine. It's a world that I'm really scared of the children being raised in. Some of them just don't have a chance. As far as vandalism insurance, yes it is going to be taken care of 100% without it effecting my rates! :dblthumb2: I just have to see WHAT is going to be taken care of. I'm still routing for the show room shine deal as previously mentioned! :props::buffing: But I'll take a good fixer up'er too!

I hope it was random and no one's messing with you. The last thing anyone wants to have happen is to do allot of work and have something happen again..

Hope everything turns out well for you! :props:

Well after a week of driving around in a small, underpowered Huydai (however you spell it) Sonata, have ol' blue back! Man, you almost forget how tall these trucks are when you're not in them everyday. She looks beautiful! It was actually taken to a great body shop that I have used a few times in the past with my other vehicles. They do top notch work! They even took out most of the scratch's that were on top of the bed (what I call the leaning area of the bed). Even got a good size bottle of the acutal paint they used so I can continue with the rest of my touch-ups as needed! Yeah, I thought about sitting outside my truck with some sort of machette or full auto gun, but that' wouldn't give me the satisfaction as knowing that he will get his 10x worse later on. Karma is a bad thing to mess with. Thank you to everyone who has commented and helped me along with this. It was a very simple process through my insurance company who made it very painless. The only bad thing is I can't wash her for 7 days and I won't be able to polish her for at least 30 days. Of course always hand wash her so maybe I can be super careful and wash every where but that panel. Thanks again everyone! Take care!

Glad to here you got it back and looking good again!!!

Wonderful news. You can actually polish it, but not wax/seal it. :)

When my ride was freshly painted, I polished it and just kept on using a glaze. I wanted to be on the safe side, so i started waxing it after, give or take 90 days. :)
