Optimums Opti-Coat

Well add me to the list of "consumers" that would like to have this available. Especially for my truck which stays outside and can sometimes sit for a few weeks without washing, etc...

I would love to try OOC out as well. My daily driver (black Jeep Wrangler) sits out in the muck of Chicago all of the time and I don't want to spend a lot of time with it (that I save for the vette).

For now I guess I'll have to just keep slapping Z-CS on it every couple of months (with OCW inbetween). I do wish Optimum would make this available to someone who knows how to polish with M205/105 to prep and do a light coat of wowa, without the professional investment.

Optiseal and Ultima also make durable WOWA sealant like Zaino CS but nowhere near as strong as Opti-coat. I am impressed but bored ... my only nitpick would be more gloss.

Thanks I was aware of Optiseal but I've never tried it. Been using Z-CS and it works great for me (by itself, or over ZAIO/Z-5) topped with OCW for looks. Guess I got stuck on something that works and I stick with it. Unless Optiseal blows it away with looks/durability (never heard that) I won't really try it.

That's what Im afraid of too. I have a syringe mostly full of OOC and an unopened bottle of CQ, but havent been in a hurry to pull the trigger and apply either for the fear of NOT having to do anything to either one of mine! Have you thought of trying a nuba over OOC?

it doesnt like detail sprays all that much, I cannot imagine it will like a wax. It is cool to watch all the soap run off the car immediately and take the dirt with it. Some cool things too.

Maybe use the OOC on the DD since it is so big? Keep the good stuff for the garage queen.

Im pretty sure I wont put either on the XLR. I think I will do CQ on the Ford. I hear you can top CQ.

Dr. G said you can top OC too...though IMO it really defeats the purpose of the coatings.

Chad, you are correct. The coatings make the paint resist dirt and water. Topping them, while it fulfills our never-ending quest to play with our paint, only serves to stop them from working as they were designed to. These are products for people who want the scratch resistance and protection they offer. If you want to test different products all the time, do not use a nano coat. I did it on mine b/c I often don't have the time to take care of my own ride while I'm taking care of everyone else's. I do beta test some products so I've had to resort to using family member's cars for that. I am happy knowing the paint is protected as well as it possibly can be at this time.

My challenge with these coatings is all the warnings that came with them and need for proof as a professional. I needed to use it on my car first to make sure it was done right. Now that I see how easy they can be when used as directed they would be of more benefit to those that dont detail more often.

That said, the product is so darn cool that I DONT want to remove it. I just wish for a bit more gloss or wetness especially on blacks.

Well, I think (hope?) that dr G will listen to the you professoinal detailers if you try and convince him that OOC is not that hard to use and "dangerous" after all, and maybe it will become available for us non-professional detailers.

I actually agree with Dr.G on not making at available to the masses. While it's not that hard to use it is permanent and having seen countless cars over the last 20yrs where newbs improperly applied wax to their vehicles, I could see it as a very bad thing!

Care needs to be taken while applying this stuff and you really have to pay attention and have good lighting. I do think most experienced weekend warriors can handle the application, but I would still understand the need for signing a waiver form.

Just my $.02

I'd be more than willing to sign a waiver but I still can not buy it. I guess the question is, is it that difficult to apply that is requires/mandates a $500 professional application (in addition to the product itself), even for those somewhat well versed in surface prep, and the new generation of WOWS sealants.

Sincerely,
experienced weekend warrior ;)

I'm only charging $300 for an app or $200 if they do multiple cars. That of course is on top of any correction work needed.

It's not that hard but it takes about an hour to do an averaged sized car. You have to do one panel at a time and make sure there are no blemishes at all. It cures pretty fast IMO and if you miss any areas, you will have to polish that area, as well as the rest of the panel with an aggressive polish to remove it. Not even lacquer thinner will remove this stuff. I think it's more the trim that I'd be worried about because if you mess up on that you are pretty much screwed.

Honestly, I've been detailing for over 20yrs now and even I missed a small area on my car on my first application. We tend to fly over a car with traditional waxes and sealants and you simply cannot do that with this stuff. I've seen several posts of other pro detailers who've had issues their first time around too.

If you really want to get your hands on one of these coatings, CQuartz can be purchased without any problems. ;)

Yeah, I have been thinking of the CQuartz route, but I feel like I know and understand Dr G's products.

In my case the think I have to keep in mind is that I would be looking to apply it to a 2nd car, a daily driver, outside 24x7, in my case an 8 year old black jeep (wrangler) over 100K miles. These ain't none too pretty to start with anyways and that's not what I'm looking for (looks). I want durable protection. From what I understand this is the ideal application of this product, but here (Chicago) it would cost ~700 to have it applied.

As skilled as I delude myself into thinking I am, I wouldn't go near my corvette with this stuff in a hundred years, but I enjoy spending my time the vette a lot more, so stripping it down, correcting it, and putting protection/looks on once or twice a year are more enjoyable.

I guess it doesn't matter for me for a bit anyway, as I just hauled the jeep into the heated garage (after a quick coin-op for the under-gunk and tires), ONR'd it and hit it with 2 coats of Z-CLR (~=OCS). Should be good for a month or 2 in our chicago winter.

Then again my Chicago winter pales in comparison to what the renfest area is getting tonight, RaskyR1! (please dig in, get warm and enjoy a brandy by the fire!)

I don't think this is out of line because AG doesn't sell Opti-Coat, but those of you interested in trying Opti-Coat can PM me and we can discuss qualification and waivers. Only those of you with full or part time detailing businesses are eligible.
