Poorboys Trim Restorer and Black Wow Comparison

:updated:

It has been about two weeks now since I applied both products to the cowl of my truck so I took another picture today to show how Poorboy's Trim Restorer and Black Wow are holding up.

You can see from the picture that the PBTR side (right) is starting to fade a little compared to the Black Wow side (left). The Black WOW side is definitely darker.

No washes since first application and it has seen a few light rains.

It's probably time to apply a second coat to the PBTR side. I wanted to see how long one coat held up initially before I applied the second coat.

Thanks for the follow-up! It's easy to forget about these kinds of threads because they don't always get updated. Now that you've brought this one to the top, it reminds me of a few other threads just like this.

Definitely keep the updates coming!

I just noticed that you have that annoying gap in your cowl as well! What a pain in the butt I cant get mine to sit straight or together no matter how hard I try it just goes back to uneven or gaped

Lol ...... I just came inside from adding some more emergency lights to my truck and saw that gap (of course saying what the heck) than came in and looked at the this thread haha guess everybody has the issue :dunno:

I have a 2003 f350 which has to stay outside 31, [24+7=31] and I wanted the cowl to be black again also. Finding out from experiance that sometime when you start with a treatment you have to continue as the plastic parts end up looking bad after all the rain we get. My solution was to use a spray flexable bumper coating after prepping the plastic. I used this on the cowl, side mirror stands and side bar steps. The paint has been on over a year now and looks as good now as when it was sprayed. Yes you have to remove the parts to be painted but if done right you should only have to to this once, worked for me.

Yea, I can get them together but they just pop back out again in no time. It has been like that since I bought it new, I believe. Unfortunately I think most of them from that era fit like this.

 No dis...... just showing how they compare on my truck. I still like the PBTR better due to it's ease of application.

Another update.

It's just a few days away from hitting the two month mark since I originally applied Black Wow and Poorboys Trim Restorer to the cowl on my truck.

The truck is pretty messy from all the salt and snow we have had over the last few weeks, but I decided to take another picture to show how the two are still holding up.

Here is the updated picture. Black Wow on the left and Poorboys Trim Restorer on the right. The BPTR side is faded while the BW side is darker and still looks pretty decent.

Black Wow definitely seems to hold up better over the long run. I just wish it was as easy to apply as the Poorboys Trim Restorer was.

Thanks for the update. The differences are quite noticeable.

I still have my Black Wow, but man, I agree with you that it is not easy to work with.

My 2008 had this problem except mine was always popped out. I took it in to the dealership and had it replaced under Ford warranty. Since then I've had no problems. :xyxthumbs: Though now I have to take it in to replace a headlight that looks like the interior plastic is melting away and a rear door panel that's flaking... ugh.

IMO, there isn't anything easy to work with dealing with the nooks and crannies on plastic windshield cowling and some tight, honeycombed black grills.

On some of the trim pieces that chronically gray out on cars I maintain I gave up and went with Meg's Accent Coating. More of a cover-up but it leaves things nice and dark and spray-on application is about as easy as it gets. Just need to reapply monthly to keep things looking good.

:updated:

This will be the last update.

Quick overview starting from the beginning.

Here is my faded wiper cowl that I started with.
(Beginning of November 2010)

After application of Black Wow on left and Poorboys Trim restorer on the right.

Here it is about 2 months later.
(end of December 2010)

You can clearly see both sides are fading, but the Black WOW side is holding up better

And here is the final update picture.
(beginning of July 2011) About 8 months later.

The wiper cowl is back to its badly faded self and has been that way now for a few months, I just never took a final pic of it for this update until today.

So that is the final update for Black Wow vs PB Trim Restorer long term test.

I just ordered some of the new Wolfgang Exterior Trim Sealant today. So when that comes in I think I'll apply that to the cowl and see how well it holds up long term. I don't have any Ultima Tire and Trim Guard plus to do a side by side comparison with, but I will at least see how well the Wolfgang Exterior Trim Sealant does at restoring the black color to the wiper cowl as well as seeing how well it holds up over the long run on it's own.

Thanks for the updates Brian! So did the Black wow leave streaks when it rained? If not it seems to be a better product than I had assumed. Either way if the WG ETS is as durable as UTTG you are in for a real treat on durability. Hopefully it can darken your cowl enough to satisfy you. If not add additional coats on a weekly or bi-weekly basis after cleaning (2 or 3 coats total).

The Black Wow on my cowl did not leave streaks, but any water that would have run off during the rain mostly would have drained down through the openings and around the edges of the cowl down into the engine compartment before it would have reached the hood. Having said that, the Black Wow that I applied to my bed rails did leave some streaking down the side of my truck after a rain, before I ended up removing it.

Thanks for the tips on the ETS.
