New to Detailing... Who invented claying?

I was trying out claying on my old Cherokee before I use it on the new Mustang and I couldn't help but wonder who thought about using lubricated clay to clean paint? It's amazing. Sorry for the noob question but I've turned into a detailing addict.

Auto Wax Company Inc. (is the corporation that owns clay magic) owns the patent. I believe that it is over next year.
