Read the instructions twice, and did not see any mention of what the spacer that is in the bag with the wrench is for.

My mind is getting a little feeble in my old age, but I think there was more to it than just spacing the backing plate away from the machine...otherwise they just would have made the output shaft a bit longer. I think it has more to do with vibration dampening, locking, removability of the backing plate, etc. There's a reason it's fiber and not metal.
What polisher are you guys talking about? If you don't mind me asking...
