Spacer in bag with wrench?

Read the instructions twice, and did not see any mention of what the spacer that is in the bag with the wrench is for.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

These units once came with little spacer washer to be put over the threaded pad stud before mounting on the unit. I guess at one time the pads used to get a little too close to the body and this just bumps it out a bit more so it won't rub.

The wrench is to hold the locking boss so that the pad can be loosened and tightened..

Initially I did but when I realized what it's purpose was, and then I lost it, I found that the pad never rubbed and haven't used it since...

I'm sure this is the spacer you are talking about. Yes use it. You need to install it onto the threaded shaft of the backing plate before you screw the backing plate into the machine. You may or may not have any problems if you don't use it, but I wouldn't want to chance it. I have heard of some people having issues when not using it.

My mind is getting a little feeble in my old age, but I think there was more to it than just spacing the backing plate away from the machine...otherwise they just would have made the output shaft a bit longer. I think it has more to do with vibration dampening, locking, removability of the backing plate, etc. There's a reason it's fiber and not metal.

My mind is getting a little feeble in my old age, but I think there was more to it than just spacing the backing plate away from the machine...otherwise they just would have made the output shaft a bit longer. I think it has more to do with vibration dampening, locking, removability of the backing plate, etc. There's a reason it's fiber and not metal.

You would think so wouldn't you. I think you're onto something with the vibration theory.

To solely move the pad away from the unit I think they'd make the female threaded component just a bit longer so that when the pad is tightened against it it's position would be that much further away.

And it also came with the Porter Cable 7424 1st generation, the one I have.

Thank you, I will have to go look at mine, I can't remember seen that washer with mine, or if I put it on, I haven't use it much, only like 3 times to apply Menz power lock...

I heard the spacer is to allow the wrench to reach the shaft easier without getting squished by the pad when tightened
