Well possibly just OCD. I have a few questions, but i can assure you i have read the posts on here for about 4 weeks now and ready to make the next step. little background:

I live in the desert southwest. mild temps year round with extremes for about 4 wks out of the year. Wind and dust are pretty prevelant.

personal car is a 2002 4runner that is black. i have been hand washing/waxing (mothers cleaner wax) for about 4 years and still have the occasional swirl and scratches. after finding this site and being given the confidence to tackle machine wax I recently purchased the porter cable xp.

I have an old work truck (1988 chevy dually) that i can initially practice on but it is a light brown color and I realize it is more forgiving than my baby's black color.

I have a few familiy/friends cars lined up that I can hone on as well

07 FJ Cruiser. Black with flakes in it, mild swirls and scratches
10 Murano. rootbeer brown near perfect paint
08 Sentra. Sliver machine wased only, lots of swirls and scratches.
02 Malibu. Hardly cleaned

So after many long nights on this site I have narrowed down my choices but am still torn.

In my cart ready for payment are:

Wolfgangs duo for swirl removal since most is light removal
Pinnacle liquid soverign wax
DP poli coat sealant (liked it for the price)
6 pack of LC flat 5.5 pads. O/W/W/BL/BL/BU (Duo comes w/ another orange)

I already have an assortent of MF towels as I was doing everthing by hand but they are showing their age so i orderd up some more towls.

I have seen some awesome results from the Megs 105/205 and it seems a lot of you are using that. Should I change the Duo to Megs. And the local car parts store carries megs. the containers look identical but the are no # markings anywhere. even the cut arrows are the same.....is this the same product?

Is this more or less aggressive than the combo sold here?

Initially this is for mine and friends/family cars but wouldnt mind making some extra cash wheni i can.

i already have an assortment of interior detailing stuff so basically what else would be a nice addition to the waxes and sealants or better waxes and sealants for a novice to learn on,

thanks and thank you for having such a plethora of information to keep me up at night.

Danny

Hi Danny!

Can't go wrong with either the M105/M205 or the Ultimate Compound and SwirlX, a more popular combo is the M205 instead of the SwirlX as you get a full quart and it's a great follow-up for either M105 or Ultimate Compound.

That's M09 Swirl Remover, long time product but a different abrasive technology.

Is this more or less aggressive than the combo sold here?

It's kind of comparing apples to oranges in the abrasive world, M09 is a VERY light cleaner/polish, for most people it's too light to be your starting product.

Initially this is for mine and friends/family cars but wouldn't mind making some extra cash when i can.

If you're getting into this to do on the side then you definitely need to get an assortment of products so that you can tackle an assortment of different paint types as it will vary from car to car.

The Wolfgang Twins are very effective and super easy to use, the Meguiar's compounds are really hard to beat at this time in the detailing world and most consider them the bench mark to beat.

The new Microfiber DA Correction System is going to be a game-changer when it becomes available but there's no hard date for the release of these products yet.

A good starting combo is actually M105 and the Wolfgang Twins, you can tackle just about anything with these 3 products.

I've seen the Wolfgang Finishing Glaze, similar to Menzerna 106FA finish down nicer than M205 numerous times and it's incredibly easy to work with as is the M205.

The M105/M205 Tag Team is a top notch product combo that will work with just about any kind of tool on any kind of paint... and I have a very long Meguiar's background not only as an end-user but also a Trainer and Instructor for the Meguiar's company, and all I'm saying is I've been very impressed with Menzerna swirl removers.

But read what others have to say and then make your choices, like I posted before, if you're going to get into detailing for fun or part time for money, you really want a number of tools in your tool chest including

  • Compounds
  • Polishes
  • Cleaner/waxes
When you're first starting out, if you're working on daily drivers then unless you're charging high dollar, you're going to want to skip the multiple step approaches and keep it fast and simple and that means,

  1. Wash car
  2. Clay paint if needed
  3. Use a one step cleaner/wax to restore the shine and protect the paint.

Thanks guys. I was really up in the air about the 105/205 so i went ahead and changed it as well as a couple other products. I actually saved some money in the process.

I have read almost all the links posted above and have thought about everything long and hard before i tackle it part time. On my car and the ones close to me and the high dollar customers i have no problem on the multi step, but what is a good one step. and am i right in assuming a green pad on ~4 becaue it needs toclean and polish or is something else recommended.

thanks again.

even though this same question comes up time and time again you guys are really helpful in every answer given
