I was just reading on the foxnews website that it is predicted that gas prices will climb to around $5.00 a gallon or more within the next year. Not to mention the possibility of "Odd/Even" rationing (for some of those that remember the late 70's and early 80's, this was a real PITA). This of course coupled in with all the other increases we face everyday. How do you think this will effect your mobile detailing? Are you doing anything now to plan for this increases? Although the economy is expected to improve overall in 2011, these increases may hove some serious effects for mobile detailers. What's your thought's on this?

It sounds like a slight cost increase is in order to offset the overhead increase. I'd start by estimating your avg. fuel cost monthly and your income monthly. Figure out how much the cost will increase and figure out how much more per detail it will cost you to maintain a healthy profit. Doing the math, the fuel difference from about $3 to $5 would increase MY monthly fuel expense be around $60. So I figure at 20 details a month, a $3 increase would cover an overhead increase. If fuel does increase, I'll just bump my prices by $5 to cover the difference and then some.

Fuel Surcharge...everyone did it last time it went to $5 a gallon. Any service that was mobile did that, florists, UPS, Fedex, etc.

The double edged sword though is it will effect your clients as well so they'll be looking to cut back or cut out services they don't need. It'll be interesting.

Agreed, I already charge more for jobs more than 20 miles away. If gases rises that much I will have to add a charge no matter where they are. It won't be much though and I doubt any of my customers will mind. Most people understand that it's not me jacking up prices, that I just have to make money too.

Maybe if the US would just drill their own oil then we wouldn't have to worry about $5 a gallon gas. But I guess that makes too much sense to the pinheads in DC.

Unfortunately, it's not the hacks in Washington necessarily. It's the Environtalmentalist putting pressure on them to prevent the drilling. I'm all for helping the environment, but at what cost? Are our kids going to be able to afford it? It's going to be expensive..... VERY EXPENSIVE!
