From the post a couple months ago, "what's your occupation" I noticed there are a number of engineers and programmers here.

I was wondering if any of you have the "Studio" package for UG or maybe the same type of package for Catia (or equivalent).

What I would like to do is design some stuff for my brochure and portfolio but I don't have the software to make it "pretty" considering a Studio license is around $15-20k a seat.

If I were to design something and say export it to an
iges file is there anyone that can dress it up a bit? I only have the ability to use basic colors.

Thanks in advance!

I meant what app are you using, am I understanding you are working in a lower level UG package and you want to get it out so it can be rendered?

Yeah, I will be creating a 3-D model and would like it rendered. The versions I have are NX4 & NX6.

I will be creating the geometry in the "Solid Modeling" package.

The bundle is called the "Design Package" but not sure exactly.

I may not be completely understanding what you mean by application.

After I design it I can export it to a readable file for just about any design program to be rendered.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I dunno nuttin bout UG but I would expect you would export it in a Step file, and I guess you're going to get it back in a .jpg or some other sort of graphics format, so I guess it doesn't matter what software the "renderer" is using.

I really can't help you I was just trying to understand what you were trying to do. I haven't looked at UG since before the NX days, I'm kind of surprised that they don't have any rendering in the basic package because I thought Pro/E and things like SolidWorks and SolidEdge and Inventor did, but I may be mistaken.

Give it a little time I'm sure with UG in the title the CAD guys will be shuffling in shortly.

I am using Inventor Series 2011, so I can try to get something out of it for you. I am mainly a Mechanical Desktop user still, but I'll give it a shot when I get a chance. Inventor will import iges, step, etc. Native is .ipt or .iam if you can export those.

No, you are right. I think UG and Catia are the only ones that sell packages separately, and at a premium too. With every new release their is a laundry list of "new" bugs that only seem to be resolved in the next version....Hmmmm, wonder why that is?????

If you aren't with GM they don't listen and don't care. But all in all the NX series is great software.

AutoCAD is even parametric now, its come a long way since i used it last.

I started working with UG when NX2 was released, IMO it was the most sound of them all to date......

That would be great, as soon as I get something modeled up I will send it your way. I greatly appreciate it too! This will help a lot.

Inventor is a really nice program, I would take that over AutoCAD any day.

BTW, I received my D151 tonight, that is a really nice squeeze bottle you sent it in, I cant wait to try it out. I am working by phone right now so I cant post a pic but once I get I the computer I intend to post a pic of it thanking you.

Also want to thank you for the extra gift that was inside. It has come at a perfect time, and reminded me that i am
not alone and don't have to take on the world by myself. It was nice to be reminded and a very nice surprise.

Thank you Dalton, you are an excellent and thoughtful human being.

Talk to ya soon....

OMG!! That was the package that got my company off of ACAD. Awful.

I think if I had to do it over again, UG (er, sorry, Siemans PLM) would be it. But the grass is always greener, they all suck, at least the big 3. The SolidWorks etc. guys seem happier, but then maybe they have lower expectations. You seem to make a lot of sacrifices to get a platform that will allow you to use native files across a large range of disciplines, at least that's the way it was in the old days.

From my experience from NX2 to NX6 it hasnt really been getting much better. At least for what I use it for.

The models and any geometry associated still explode giving "dumb" solids or sheet bodies when crossing platforms. I hate working with imported Catia files because they come in with about a bazillion sheet bodies making them very hard to work with when you have a free formed surface.

Although, they all seem to be going in the same direction. I think within the next 10 years they will all be virtually the same programs with different GUI's.

Right now UG/Siemens owns the assembly type designing and Catia owns the consumer design market because you can design a cell phone case much easier with the surfaces package than the free form package in UG.....so I've heard. I am in the assembly end.

Catia never liked sharing files, I'm not sure if they got better when they went over to Windows. Step really changed the game for sharing solids, although they are still going to be "dumb" when you open them in another program.

It's such a shame, why can't they all just get along......lol!

No problem my friend. Glad you liked it.

Well, I started with Mechanical Desktop in MDT6, and it was awful. Very buggy, constant crashes, etc. I think it was like a 2001 or 2002 release.

By the time I was using MDT 2007, I had figured all the ins and outs of the program out, and it was consistently getting better. 2007 was a great release. Then 2008 was horrible, then 2009 was good. It has the new Autodesk style layouts, CUI and stuff, but it is no longer supported and is the last release. Now when you have a bug, you figure out how to workaround it, fix it, or leave it.

It has definitely grown through the years, but as a long-time AutoCAD user, Mechanical Desktop is still my favorite. My custom .pgp (typed in commands) is over a page long, and .lsp file is around 5 or 6 pages long - so I like my traditional CAD environment.

So, :nomore: knocking my Mechanical Desktop. :D

I had no idea they were still making that software in 2007 or later, we got off of it before the turn of the century...

Haha, then I can DEFINITELY see why you wouldn't like it.

It became a stellar (IMO) 3D AutoCAD program, but with the push to move to Inventor, Solidworks, ProE, etc., it got left behind. 2009 was their last release of MDT. The Old King is dead, long live the king. :)

I just love the UI of AutoCAD (been using it since R11), so therefore, I haven't totally embraced Inventor yet. But, I know I will have to.
