what kind is this pad

This pad came with the dewalt I got used. I have no idea what it was used for. Its a solid piece pad with a hard felt in the middle and covered with wool I think. The center has a hole to install. Is it for buffing out wax or applying polish? I included some photos.

Is it for buffing out wax or applying polish?

A wool pad is for heavy correction and compounding, I wouldn't recommend using it to buff off wax.

That is a double sided wool pad, you need an adapter to use it on a rotary buffer. I just happen to have an article on this...

That is a double sided wool pad, you need an adapter to use it on a rotary buffer.

Just to be clear, is the reason for needing the adapter because the threaded spindle on the rotary is too long? Looks like the adapter is shorter, so that the spindle does not reach through the pad and potentially cause serious damage to the working surface. Is this correct? I've never used a double sided pad and adapter.

Yes. And, because it's a double sided pad, the pad on the buffer side will be too close to the body of the buffer.
