Hello All,
What kind of concentration of isopropyl alcohol is good for car paint? And is it the same isopropyl alcohol sold at walmart?
Thanks in advance.
What's "good" for car paint? None. As Mike P. notes in his article on IPA wipedowns, IPA is a solvent for the clearcoat. That being said, the safest according to the paint chemists Mike spoke with is 10%. Others will argue that you can use any concentration with perfect results. Here's a link to his article: http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum...ow-mix-ipa-inspecting-correction-results.html
I also note that Optimum recommends using a mixture of Dawn and IPA or Optimum Power Clean to clean the surface prior to using Opti-coat. They say that IPA doesn't breakdown wax and oils and can re-deposit them as it evaporates. Kinda brings into question the whole idea behind IPA wipedowns.
My personal opinion given the information presented by Mike P and Optimum is that IPA not only has the potential to harm the clear, it is largely a waste of time and useless at the task that people think they are using it for.
Sounds like you were in the Opti class at DF?! lol
Nope, just read Mike P's article and Chris' (Optimum) comments on Opti-Clear. Anyway, wish I could have attended but had some business commitments. Maybe next year.
Opti-Clear or Opti-Clean? Because the r and n are not even close on the keyboard.
So after buffing, how do you get the oils out? I hear dawn is bad for the car too.
Typo on my part, meant Opti-Coat.
