Revamped Dewalt Polishers

Dewalt recently announced new polishers. Details are here.

The basics:
- 3-position bail handle OR standard side handle
- 12 amp motor
- 600-3500 RPM, electronically controlled
- variable speed trigger

Looks to me to be a very solid tool when it comes out!!
 
WOW. I just read the thread over at Autopia where the Dewalt Research Engineer or whoever it was came and asked questions. I was wondering to myself, "Self, I wonder if they are ever gonna change things up?" Then I came here at lunch and see this.

I probably will have room in my buffer stable for it when it comes. ;)

It's lighter than the current model as well. They had them at SEMA and I held them side by side, there was a difference in weight. I just couldn't remember the specs.

It's not the best because it was taken in a hurry with my phone.
 
3500 RPMs?! Wow...who would ever need that much power? Looks like a nice machine though.
 
From the pictures and specs, there are already a few things i like about it.

1. Soft start
2. Low rpms
3. Lighter (though weight was never a problem for me.)
4. Rubber coating over the head of the buffer offering better grip
5. The line of rubber on top of the head (between the head and body) and the line of rubber next to the speed dial will prevent the body from getting scratched up when you place the polisher on the floor.
6. Side vents with mesh screening to prevent larger particles from entering (huge problem with the dw849 with new wool pads.)
 
Funny thing I asked about the new Dewalt at Detail Fest and I was told they canned the new rotary .

That's too high for current basecoat/clearcoat paint systems but it could be for other markets, note the bold portion below...

So maybe high speeds are needed for the markets that include grinding metal and concrete...

I know (accidentally) with the right wheel and a matching high speed, you can shine solid steel real quick! I don't remember what wheel I was using, something from 3M. . .

Also, the idea may be to market it as a combination sander/polisher/grinder(in a pinch).
 
I wonder how lighter are we talking about. Looks good, how would you guys compare this one to the makita?

I just got mine delivered last night. It came with a set of gloves, the two handles. It goes down to 600 rp,. Looks like a nice machine. I will be trying it out early next week.
 
If you can, please post some pics. If you dont mind me asking, what was the price. Does seem like it is a durable build like the old one?
 
Troy, I forgot to take pics last night. My bad. I paid $177 plus shipping. It feels awfully durable. Came with backing plate, gloves, 2 handles, wool pad. The dial actually has the RPM speeds on it.

Some pics would be great, Eric. Looks like a nice machine and is priced reasonably.
 
Wow, that is much cheaper than what i was anticipating. If it is even half of the quality of the old one, I think it may even take over the market Giving the Makita, flex and Shinex a run for their money.
