Hello, I am Spitshine 101, I have been messing around with cars the last 20 years.
Need some help. I am working on a 97 toy. HAs been exposed to the weather.
I buffed the trunk and hood, but i am seeing a slight fade on these parts.
Is this clearcoat failure, or oxidation. I did make 3 passes with Meguires Ultimate compound with a DA, Dosnt seem to touch the fadding any ideas how to proceeed?
Thanks

I take it you don't have a paint gauge?
You sure it has a clear coat?
It could be oxidation but oxidation tends to cover a whole panel but depends could have been part in cover but as you suspect it could be clear coat failure.

Hi Spitshine101,

Welcome to AutogeekOnline! :welcome:

Sounds like clear coat failure. If you see the color of the car coming off and onto your buffing pad then you've broken through the clear and have exposed the basecoat.

Some people have had luck applying a "coating" to at a minimum protect the paint a little longer, but other than that it will need repainting.

Look at some of the pictures in this collection of cars with clear coat failure and see if how your car's paint matches any of the pictures.

I have looked at the photos that were sent from Mr. Philips.
My project looks faded on most of the panels, nothinglike the pictures.
I have digital pictures of the the panels. I need to figure out how to upload them so the forum can see them. I am seeing a reputable auto body supply shp tomarrow maybe they will have some ideas. Feed back please

I was able to upload one picture

This is what the faded panel looks like, really need to loo at it from a side view. When one looks at it from the the top as shown its realy hard to see the fading.

If its a reputable supply shop they should know something of the issues you can face but no guarantee.
A actual bodyshop could well give you a better idea as they could possible give a free quote???
Afraid the pic does not reveal much especially as silver as it appears on my screen hides many faults. Sorry cant help more.
As Mike say's if you are getting paint transfer there certainly is no lacquer.

Well i tried to upload more pictures, website failed, one better than none.

I looked at the "File Name" for your pictures and here's how it reads, there are empty SPACES in the file name,

While you computer might be able to work with picture file names with SPACES in the name, the "Internet" cannot.

Change your picture file names to look like this and they will upload just fine.

See how I removed the spaces?

I cover this in my article here,

It's explained and shown in this screenshot from the above article, see the text on the left side of the below picture...

Hello everyone. I stopped by the Auto Body Supply Shop Today.
They told me to treat the car like it has oxidation. However if there is paint transfer
then the clearcoat is shot. Here is one one photo still having tough time of uploading the pictures

Hi Nick,

I got your e-mail and looked at your pictures and it doesn't look like clear coat failure to me. It's probably just light oxidation so try a light polish, paint cleaner or even a cleaner/wax.

The reason you can't upload your pictures is because the file size is way to huge...

Re: photos

Ok people one more time and thats it. Mike I am learning alot!
I did use ultimate compound on these panels took just took a little off of the oxidation.
Next step is the rotary. I dont know what compounds to use at this point.
I have used heavy duty cut Meguires #6 before on another project and it turned out great. Do i need to get a glaze also?
Thanks for all you patience!

I have one picture outlined in black these areas are the darker areas of the paint. At this point the paint is very smooth and clean.
