So, I was just viewing the thread on "What is your fav interior dressing" and it got me to thinking (dangerous)

What are some of the things you were told (detail forums) that were a no no, but that you have learned from first hand expierence was nothing but a pack of lies

My first one would be that Armor All will cause your interior/trim to deterioate. This is simply NOT TRUE

Do you have any examples you would like to share?

Thank you for your time,

That Dawn will soften your paint and eat your clear coat.

a looooooong time ago i was told wax was suppose to be applied on the top panels(hood roof trunk) in a front to back motion and on the side panels(doors fenders) in an up and down motion. this was they way the paint was sprayed and it was suppose to give the max shine and reflection but i personally have not noticed any difference in the look in relation to what direction the was has been applied. i could be wrong just my observation.

The more expensive a product is the better. Look at how much longer Duragloss or Collinite lasts vs. a lot of high priced waxes.

That you need plenty of suds and water...to safely wash a car. Enter ONR. Myth over.

Back in the 70's, when I was begining to drive, Armor All was basically the only choice. Over time, it has been proven that the Armor All at that time did dry out the dash boards and plastics which helped in promoting cracking. The original formula has changed and the materials used in cars have changed since then. The newer Armor All may not have the issues it once had, but I guess I still have some reservations about using it because It was a real pain replacing my dash board in my 68 Mustang due to cracking. Just my 2 cents worth.

I think that is just in case while applying the wax, if you accidentally induce scratches/swirls, it wouldn't be as obvious. Mike Phillips had a term for it ... straight line... something...

Thanks everyone. Really enjoying reading your responses so far. Keepum comin :dblthumb2:

Myth 2 ~ A picture DOES NOT tell a thousand words

That you can do much paint correction without a DA (or like device). OK...if you are 18 YO and have arms like a gorilla....

I am still getting my head around those often suggesting Pledge for every area of car care from dash, to leather, to wheels, to paint, to rubber. Enlighten me to the benefits ....

mine would be that turtle wax was king! i believed this back when i knew nothing about detailing. i would see everyone snatch turtle wax like crazy at autozone, oreily, etc. Even my dad used turtle wax. But now, turtle wax is stashed all the way in back on the trunk! Hello Collinte 845!

Never put wax on Chrome.
(still debatable?) I've done it for years on original chrome pieces and re-plated chrome pieces with no untoward effects. just sayin.

Testing... Will delete this post in a minute

Haha...too late to delete it Corey. What you see pictured here folks, is Corey's first ever polisher...no wonder he got swirls back then....

LOL Richy!! I was testing an image resizing since AG doesn't resize automatically. Didn't want to screw up the page with my oversized image so was deleting it afterwards.

That's OK buddy...you know me, I can never pass up an opportunity to tease!!!

I think this supposed to reduce the visibility of scratches
edit: oops, already been said.

Loads of my neighbors told me that pressure washer will take the paint right off!! I was like, "Yeah, right!!!"

And they kinda hate me now for not following their advise!! And I'm loving it! :D

Nearly everyone who saw me wax, told me that I'd polish the paint right off! Yea! I was waxing at that time!

+ Before I got into detailing, I saw how ppl treated their car's paint and it looked as if the car's paint is super durable!!

But when I started working on my car and learnt about it, I found it is softer and more delicate than a baby's skin!!!

Yea, no kidding. Getting into the detailing scene definitely made me realize how delicate paint really is.
