I received a call Monday from a client referral. The caller advised that he had a 2006 Corvette, Sunset Orange. A sprinkler from an adjacent apartment complex had hit the car while it was parked at his office. He was out of town for a week and returned to find the damage. This is not a show car but is in exceptional condition. The client freaked out of course and began doing his own research on some Vette forums. He tried clay and the vinegar solution but neither removed the spots completely. They sofented down some but were still there. After I talked him off the ledge we agreed that I would come out Saturday and see what I could do. BTW, the client was adamant that a rotary not touch his car and wanted the least aggressive method possible.
My game plan was to try a paint cleaner via 3401. I felt this was the most mild approach if these were Type 2 spots.
I placed a call to Mike Phillips to run it by him and he agreed that this would be the best approach to start and would probably get the job done. I want to take minute here to personally thank Mike. Where else but AG can you pick up the phone and speak directly to one of the best polishers in the world. Way awesome. Thanks Mike!!
Upon first inspection of the paint I could see the water spot etching. You had to look hard but they were there.
You can see the 3D aspect of the spots.
So, my process was this: I washed again with ONR (2BM) just to show the client what the two bucket method was since he had heard about it. Dried then clayed again with Megs medium aggressive clay. I wanted to try that again just in case the client hadnt done it properly. He did. The spots didn't budge. I moved on to Klasse AIO. I chose the LC black pad via the Flex 3401. I chose the black pad knowing that the client demanded the least aggressive method. I was hoping it would work and boy did it. Thankfully! It took several passes but the etching was leveled out nicely with no remains.
After the Klasse AIO treatment. Same spot were the water spots were living.
I finished her up with a coat of Reload.
I was very happy with the results and the client was way more than pleased. That is what counts the most. I really love referral clients because that means I am doing something right. Especially since the referral came from my most discriminating client. And yes, a DA can correct the notoriously hard Corvette clear. Does it take longer? Yes. Great results? Yes.
