Just wanted to share a couple pictures of a car that I recently acquired. This is a 1988 Oldsmobile Delta 88 that was owned by my in-laws. They originally bought the car new in 1988 with 83 miles on the odometer. The car now sits with 139,732 miles on it. After sitting for 7 years and having many discussions with my father-in-law, the car is now mine :D. Going out tomorrow to start some basic maintenance to get it started so that I can move it to my house. Anyway, I have attached a few pictures as it sits in the garage.

Let's just say that my wife is not thrilled about me acquiring this car! This will be replacing my SRT-4 Neon as my daily driver, so the mileage will go way up on it. In the last 2 1/2 years I have put 76,000 miles on my Neon .

Good luck with that man... It's in great hands though, so I can't wait to see the turn-around:dblthumb2:

Richards sportin an 88!!!

I know a good detailer in your area that could make that baby shine :D

The interesting part to me is the fact that my father-in-law repainted the car with 3 coats basecoat and 3 coats of clear, to the best of his knowledge. I know, who forgets stuff like that, but it happens. Never been in an accident and no rust that I've found. Always garage kept!

Those are really great cruisers. Their clear coat is horrible though

Good luck Richard

Richard, when your in-laws see what you will do to it to transform it, they will be pissed off at you! Get your wife in the backseat....can't do that in your Neon, hahahhahahaha.

Don't know why your wife wouldn't be happy about you getting the car.... or did you use this as the excuse to buy the DeWalt?

Congrats on the acquisition... those 3800 V6es are bulletproof!

Looks like that baby will clean right up.Please share the before and after pic's if you can?
The problem your going to have is,your FatherInLaw will want it back

That will be a fun project Richard! Be sure to take alot of pics and try to document it all.

On a side note you put an insane amount of miles on your car! Thats crazy, I hope you enjoy driving lol

Richy, I literally laughed out loud when I read this! Oh yeah, washing the windows (cowgirl style)!

You guys crack me up! Richy, what can I say!?! Thanks for the support everyone :). I know this isn't a high end car or anything like that, I just wanted to do something a little different. And what I meant earlier is that my wife is not thrilled or excited, but she is happy.

Richard,

That's a great project car with lots of life and potential. You'll be pleasantly surprised how nicely that car cleans up and it's in really great shape from what i can see....

Photos when it's finished!! :props:

Small delay in this project, after leaving a clients house for a maintenance wash last night, I'm pretty certain I blew a head gasket :(. Now I have to coordinate a tow over 3 hours to my house . Guess it's time to put a clutch in the Neon or just go buy a new vehicle. :dunno:

If I were a betting man, I'd bet you it's probably an intake gasket, not a head gasket. That's the more common problem of the two on 3800 V6es.

Shoot, I had that happen on my old HO 2.8...now THAT was a money pit. I've always had good luck with the 3800's, justa lotta alternators and the occassional water pump...oh, and the coil packs.

I'm a big fan of the '88-'91 full-size GM cars, having had a bunch of Park Avenues and LeSabres. They don't break often and when they do break, they're relatively easy to fix. As long as salt hasn't got the best of it, and the tranny is OK, it's probably worth fixing your gasket issue. No offense intended, but I'd much rather spend my time behind the wheel of your 88 than any Neon. I'm not at all fond of the wire wheel covers, but almost any fwd GM mid or full-size 15" or 16" wheel will interchange. After some serious cut 'n buff time to show off your skills, you oughta be able to make that repaint job look pretty decent.
