Placing your business card on a car window a good or bad marketing idea?

Also most car shows, Alot of people dont know how to wash correctly. Most cars are full of rids and swirls.

I went to one today, Alot of cars with new paint jobs, looked like a road map with all the buffer trails on them.

Every single guy or gal there, is always more than willing to strike a conversation on the car they have. I think this could get some very good clients when handled correctly.

I agree with Flash on all points. Just put the flyers/cards on the car. If the person gets mad you don't want them as a customer anyway because they will have an attitude. Consider it a qualifier for level headed clients.

I personally only put cards on high end vehicles. When the person calls me I say, "I normally don't do that but the car was so nice I couldn't resist" ...which is true.

Well, it is if you've been in business for a while and you have referrals, etc. but for those of us starting out we have to get our name out there somehow.

Really lol!?!?!??! I am only 11 months old! I never once put a card or flyer on a car and I am making 7,000 a month revenue...... how on earth can that be possible lol?!?!?!? Maybe I went out and found the work, did a great job, had word of mouth, and didnt stop there - still went out and found more work. It is very doable my friend :dblthumb2:

Say you put a card on a car, Owner then call you saying you scrtached his car, put swirls in his paint.

What would you guys do, I would be suprised if this has never happend before. Someone simply trying to work you over to get a free detail.

I truly hope it is inspirational without sarcasm. It is very unprofessional to me to knock on people's doors to sell a service.... put stuff on their car...... or to cold call people. Maybe you will get a hit..... but the other 95% of people will more than likely dislike your company for annoying them. There is a way to go out and be proffessional about it - and putting advertising on people's cars is not the way to go...... unless you are throwing a rave or something lol.

bottom line is word of mouth via clients is the best method and the biggest compliment to your business.

these other methods can be used, but it seems to be too touchy of a subject with folks.

meeting people in person and striking up a conversation seems to be a great method. they get to know you and see how passionate you are about the business. if they don't do business with you, you will at least make a lasting impression with them and they will probably send people your way. networking is key in business, especially our business!

Around here where I live there must be a "hack detainer" every 3 miles up and down the road. Mosty here today gone tomorrow kinda shops. These guys roll into town spend a ton of money on business cards and flyers. These are also the guys who advertise $70 for a full detail, and thats what their cards advertise too. This leaves me to explain or "educate" my potential client on the differences between them and me. Usually resulting in a new customer who now TRUSTS me as a professional. To make my point, If you are truly good at what you do,your clients will spread the word. Dont be afraid to ask for referrals from customers who are wowed by your work. Heck slide them 5 or 10 business cards. Your ROI (return on investment) will be a better quality and hopefully long time customer. IMO leaving cards on cars everywhere kinda makes you look desperate and unprofessional since thats what the HACKS do. Just my.02

I think you would get a better result if they hang them out to people... But then again, you would be limiting your reach to only guys...

I was looking into advertising a while back, and with mail in, only about 2% of those who get it will look at it, and 2% of those will call, then the question is, how many of those can you secure as a customer...

And I bet that with leaving cards on people windshields the rate is much lower...

I don't like junk mail in my email, and I don't like no one putting junk on my cars... I actually went around picking up some of those and chased one guy that was placing cards on windshields once, and dump a bunch of his own cards in his car...

I will not flyer every car i see but i will flyer very nice cars and sometimes even leave a personal note on it. If the owner doesn't like it then it wasn't meant to be but if they do then the 45 seconds it took you to write something is a great investment of time.

To the OP, make it personal. Make them feel special. If you do it to 50 cars and get 1 detail out of it then I consider it a successful campaign.

We have very professional looking business cards, and only place them on high end vehicle. This is only one of many tools we use in our marketing. I was surprised at how it turned out to be one of our most successful ways to use this tool, placing the card on the driver window. My career background is in Industrial Sales (35 + years), so talking to people, developing a business relationship with customer comes easy to me. All the customer wants is to feel they received value for their money no matter what it is. Giving the customer what they are expecting, plus added value in your service they were not expecting, makes you the professional. In most cases, you will have a customer as long as you don’t lose their trust. I’m amazed at how many customers talk about the poor service they’ve received by detailers. This is a customer service business. Our customers know we are not a “flight by night” operation. I agree with many of you about finding something placed on your car, however, the business card placed gently on the drivers window, has turned into new business for us, which lead to that person telling another person and so on. So before some of you start knocking a useful tool in your marketing strategy tool box, and the different ways that tool can be used, you may want to reconsider. I’ve had several experiences where I was placing our cards on “nice cars”, and stuck up a conversation with someone walking by in the parking that turns into business. In our business, we should always be in sales mode, and a good salesman “doesn’t looks down on the tools he/she has available to them that will make him/ her successful.
