what happens if u try doing this?? how does claying effect polishin/compounding?

the embedded contaminants in the paint will transfer to your pad thus, causing more swirl marks.

Claying removes debris that becomes embedded in the surface. These particles vary in size and if the clay step is skipped then you'll be buffing that debris into the paint causing more damage rather than removing it.

This is from 1/2 of the hood on a 3 month old Hyundai Elantra. Imagine polishing this dirt and debris back into the paint.!!!!!

I wonder what polishing was like before detailing clay came along.

I agree,,i always clay customers vehicles,,they are impressed when I show them before and after on how smooth the paint is..:dblthumb2:

Detailing clay came along around 1990 (see below)...just in time for the new base coat/clear coat paints.....people didn't know they needed clay on SS paint, except for, as they found out later what detail clay was originally invented for, paint overspray.

"In 1990, Tadao Kadate of Japan invented clay resin. It was the first product to safely, instantly and cheaply remove airborne contaminants from delicate automotive paint. It was an instant success and proclaimed a "miracle product". To this day, Detailing Clay is the only product that takes off stubborn over spray with a single, swipe of the hand". ~Florida Tool

Do you mop with out brooming (I hope you meant sweeping as brooming isn't a word)?

Do you mop without vacuuming?

Possibly: Do you use the carpet extractor without vacuuming?

Let me play devil's advocate: the polish and compounds that you use contain abrasives as well. Also, just cause you wash and clay doesn't mean you removed 100% of the contaminants either. Furthermore, as was pointed out earlier, for decades people polished their vehicles without claying.

No, never!

Do you clay with out washing the car at all?

Have you every polished a car without claying? If you have..and the car is bad ..it's kinda gross since you can feel the contaminants on the car.

I too polished without claying for decades. I'd heard of it but did not believe it was that useful. I'm now converted.

This reminds me of the time about 20 years ago when my neighbour asked my nephew to wax his car for him. It was a new Cadillac or Lincoln ( black ) of course. Well, he waxed it alright, but that was all he did, no wash, no polish. Just wax.
Groan.

@ OP: I'm enjoying the topic of your thread.... I also find it disrespectful to you, and your well intentioned question, when the etymologists start waging their battles.

On the other hand, creative coinage sometimes can be a breath of fresh air! :)

The term brooming has been used by people who do should work for years. Who knows it may well be in the dictionary. Have you checked lately?

if u r gonna polish and correct u paint u gotta clay . for many years before I found ag I never clayed. always just used a cleaner wax . but now and everything I learned from forum members, I now know 100x more about detailing . first time I clayed I was totally amazed at the crap it pulled off the paint and if u gonna use a da and do correction work all that crap u will be just like grinding right back into the paint . IMO .
