Too Much Pressure?

Is it normal when polishing a panel, especially the hood, for it to pop in when applying heavy pressure? It pops back as soon as I pass over that spot but I am wondering if I am using excessive downward pressure?

I am always focused on maintaining pad rotation as my gauge of how much pressure I can apply. With a GG DA that can be quite a bit of downward pressure. I don't want to damage my car or anyone's for that matter.

I wouldn't think this is normal. Would 10 pounds of pressure be enough to do this? Have you ever measured how much pressure you are putting on a scale?

What if one day it doesn't pop back out?

I guess I am using too much pressure. I didn't think I was pressing excessively hard . The hood is where I usually experience this in areas that are not supported underneath. The hood would deflect slightly and then pop back when I was doing a section pass.

Time to lighten up a bit on the pressure.

It's bound to happen a little bit if you are buffing in the dead center of a hood. Like you said there isn't much under there supporting that fairly large piece of thin sheet metal. You can get the middle of a hood to deflect with just 5-10lbs of pressure, which is less than the recommended pressure for a PC.

Just use some common sense and be careful in those areas. As long as you aren't pushing so hard that it doesn't pop back you are fine. The rule of "deflection means your pushing too hard" is meant more for normal sized panels. If you're working a fender, door, trunk and it deflects, THEN you're pushing too hard. I never worry about it on a hood or roof.
