How often do you change your oil?

ive been doing 3000 / or atleast once a year. per manual (new car which is a chevy. we all know how gm likes to find ways outta warranty so im making sure i dont give em a reason to not honor it at least for now.)

It's changed when the light comes up, and it's changed with synthetic. I don't really care what brand of synthetic it is, most of it falls into the same class type (class III) so it's the same.

Consumer reports as well as others have reported time after time again that it is pointless to change the oil before 3k miles.

I'm not a big fan of consume reports, I think someone is paying them off...

Too many variables for anyone to suggest when it is a good time to change oil, IMO. Routines are good, but knowing your vehicle is better. Additionaly, my truck has been running better and better now that I have ignored everyone's suggestions, and now change it according to the oil pressure gauge, gas milage, noise, and drive quality. But I'm the only one that drives my truck, so if there are other problems, I can usually tell.

Kia Sorento SX - manufacture recommends every 5000 miles - 7000 miles if driven on the highway more than City

Kia Optima LX - same as the Sorento

Toyota Supra TT - whenever I felt like it. Anywhere from 1 month to every 2000 miles on REAL syntactic oil.

I don't care that much for that publication.

If you wanna know about the real break down of your oil then send it to these guys

Blackstone Labs

pay around 30~50 bucks to find out how your oil is breaking down in your engine and if you should be worried of the actual engine about to bust, to if any of the engine additives are breaking down in your oil changing habits.

I change my oil in my car once a year. I drive under 6000 miles a year and use Mobil synthetic. On the van I change it every 10,000 miles or one year and use Mobil EP.

How'd you come to the conclusion that someone is paying them off?

My car gets it changed once a year on VW's dime. Owner's manual says 12 months or 10,000 miles. I put on 7,000 miles last year.

There was a huge thread on the golfmk6 forum about this. Some people don't care what VW says and change it every 3k - 5k miles. Others think VW puts unicorn tears in the oil at Wolfsburg. I'm not gullible. I'm pretty sure the unicorn tears are synthetic.

Just a theory, really. But for anyone to tell me that it's fine to change my oil well after it's through, money is being exchanged somewhere.

My daily driver is a 2009 Rav4 (4cyl/awd). There is a maintenance light that appears about every 4500 miles. I change it then with a synthetic blend. In the cold months, I will have it changed. In warm months, I do it myself.

I have a 2001 GMC Sonoma that I change its oil about twice a year (about every 3500 miles).

My wife gets her oil changed at the dealership. They have a free oil change program for the first 2 years of ownership.

I recently bought a newer house that has a garage. So, I probably will handle all the oil changes once I get the garage properly set up.

Wow, thanks for all the responses. I feel much better about my once a year oil changes now :xyxthumbs:.

As far as who does mine, I do it myself for my jeep. The Nissan dealer does my wife's Murano, and they give us 1/2 off oil changes for as long as we own it (<$20 after discount), and the Ford dealer does my F150. The Murano and Ford are newer and under warranty, so as someone said earlier, I don't want to give any excuses for "non-coverage".

i change mine every 7500km which is about 4660miles.

Every fourth run on the track. Or about every mile! :D

I use Mobile One full synthetic every 5k-6k.

:iagree::iagree:

never a major issue with any ride, and owned many cars and trucks including the three now at the house. Mobil 1 around 5k on daily drivers, and 1 annual change on garage kept toy.

Mobil1 isn't synthetic

Mobil 1
The world's leading synthetic motor oil brand, Mobil 1 is an advanced full synthetic motor oil family that provides performance beyond conventional motor oils. Mobil 1 motor oils meet or exceed the toughest standards of Japanese, European and U.S. car builders and provides exceptional protection against engine wear, under normal or even extreme conditions.

I'd say that it is synthetic

Mobil1 isn't synthetic

almost all of Mobil 1's "synthetic" oils are a Grp III base stock...it does have some PAO adds, but only enough to keep it in SAE viscosity range.

Something that was posted on a old forum a bit ago about the "best oil" for your car

BTW - There is absolutely nothing wrong with Mobil 1. It is a Grp III hydrocracked dino oil being sold as a 100% synthetic...by definition that is a lie.
That is why I do not like Mobil 1...I have a hard time with liars.

Royal Purple is a Grp IV PAO synthetic...it is not even close to Mobil 1's formulation.

The only other two oils that are a synthetic in this poll is Amsoil (Grp IV PAO) and that excludes the XL line. Red Line is a Grp V ester base...the most expensive (and best) base stock available.

German Castrol in not in the poll...it is a Grp IV PAO synthetic. Bang for the buck it's at the top of my list.

I take mine to the valvoline place when the light comes on. They always try to sell me a radiator flush (which Honda recommends against), a transmission fluid flush, and a brake fluid flush. I just smile and say in my best demure girl voice. "I don't know...I'll ask my husband when I get home"
