Topping Sealant+Wax=Wasteful

How about topping 845 with a glossy spray wax like OCW, MQW, or WGDGS? I keep hearing about the durability of 845. But not so much about the gloss and look. So would adding one of this or a product similar give u the best of both worlds?

I think thats a good question. This is another thing imo that people make to much to do about. IMO 845 and any lsp look great as long as the surface is polished well. People see different things but beauty really is in the eye of the beholder...

except sometimes.... Sometimes enough people say something and it becomes true to all of us.

The only way to know the truth is to try it out side by side and see if you see a difference.

Personally I find trying products out side by side you can find no visual difference at all. However I still believe when I use certain lsp I am looking at some beauty that has never before been discovered! LOL

If I was to put them side by side though the difference seems to disappear.

Anyway, I say it doesn't hurt to add that spray wax and its fun so go for it.

Although I agree it is just your opinion. What you consider a waste of time others consider a vital operation. To each his own.

I have yet to find a sealant that has the look of a carnauba. BFWD comes close but adding a carnauba like Midnight Son makes it look richer and wetter. I have no problem pitting on a sealant every 3-6 months and a wax once a month. Some cars I have seen with the most durable sealants while looking shiny, IMHO look like they have a coating of plastic on them.

My thoughts exactly!

Are Reload and Permanon made out of the same stuff? Do they apply the same way? Thinking of using on top of Opti-Coat.

I have not put a sealant on my new gl450 nor my wife's new 650i since both purchased last october. I washed them, clay bared them with pinnacle ultrapoly then 2coats of Liquid Glass twice 4 hours apart for curing time. Both vehicles are black and I washed them both today and yes the water still beads up. We live in the burbs outside of Chicago so we don't have the best of winters but this year has not been bad.:xyxthumbs:

I think some people top off a sealant with wax because it adds another step to the whole detailing process. I mean, most people who do this stuff take enjoyment out of it. Maybe it adds another layer of protection. Maybe it makes the paint look glossier, but you definitely feel like you did more to pamper your car. And I'd bet no one does both thinking to themselves "Oh jeez, I can't believe I gotta take the time to apply wax now too."

Probably more to do with the person's own peace of mind and lack of a budget :dblthumb2:

This is a somewhat old thread...

Anyways, like some have mentioned topping is solely dependent on the user. If you feel that it adds in someway to the paint who am I to say it doesnt. I myself am a purest when it comes to LSP's and choose it for its characteristics. I am talking from a business stand point and not for personal vehicles. If a customer wants multiple lsp's on their cars, I'll give it to them but if they dont request anything specific I use what single LSP I feel will bring out the best of the cars paint. Natural gloss, bright shine, deeping/darkening, candy coating/plastic..etc.

Now with paint coatings like OG/OC, I feel it gives the paint a neutral gloss look so I can understand if people do top that with a wax or sealant purely for looks as the paint is already protected for years to come.

If you're a hobbyist and just getting into detailing then go for it! We all have the urge to try new products and combination with which we feel adds additional "zing" to the paint.

agreed...
I've tried it every which way....
sealant to start out with then 845
sealant then soveran
sealant then another type sealant

I've settled on a WOWA sealant (Crystal seal my fav now) and a spritz sealant like wolfgang or BF ploy with normal weekly wash...

I see what you are getting at but I beleive a good sealant with a 12-24 hour bonding period and then wax adds a touch more gloss and depth than just a sealant. On a daily driver type vehicle I like to use Optimum Opti-Seal (2 applications) and their basic spray wax and call it quits. On a higher end vehicle I like to use a high quality sealant and top with something like Dodo Juice Supernatural Carnauba. To me the sealant will get some extra life (month or two) when topped with a good qaulity wax since the wax is taking the beating while the sealant is underneath. On a vehicle that is detailed every month and washed once a week I can see where this is not really needed but it's all personal preference I guess.

No, they are very different products.

Personally I use Permanon on my wheel wells and wheels.

Reload is my preferred product for topping a coating such as is the case you mentioned. It's much more cost effective and isn't rendered useless by most car washes.
