Mini Cooper R paint correction, Opti-Guard protection

This hot little hatch actually belongs to the owner of the E46 I recently detailed and after inspection it was scheduled for a 2-step correction with Opti-Guard protection. After working on a full size Chevy truck last weekend, having this little thing to work on was a relief to say the least, but surprisingly, it was still a fair amount of work.

This vehicle did see occasional tunnel washes in the winter (slap n' Scratch) which was very evident upon the initial inspection. The scratching and marring on the tops and passenger side were not quite as severer as the drivers side, and the lower you went down on the side panels, the worse they were. For those of you familiar with the slap n' scratch wash, you will understand why this is. ;)

Process:

Wash - ONR
Wheels - Sonax Full Effect
Tires - OPC
Clay - Clay Magic fine clay, ONR as lube
Paint correction - D300/MF followed by 106fa on tangerine LC pads (GG6 DA). Drivers side also needed some M105/Surbuf.
Opti-Guard prep - Foam bath with OPC/CGCW followed by wash with CGCW, 15% IPA wipe-down
Glass - Meguiar's D120
Exhaust tips/metal trim - Optimum Metal Polish
Tires - Meguiar's Hyper Dressing 3:1
Opti-Guard application - Paint was done using CarPro Suede MF applicators, trim/wheels were done with foam applicator, plastic grills done with air brush.

Thanks for looking!

Awesome work as usual Chad! Also GREAT pictures! I really thought it was col how you applied OG to the grille with an airbrush...makes me really want to give that a try!

Excellent work Chad!! Nothing less than the best is ever expected from you buddy!

Another great job Chad , I guess your dad came over and you worked out applying the OG using a Air brush .

Rasky,

Looks fantastic, that paint is just dripping wet. My next OG/OC application will be with the Car Pro Suede MF and block ... any application tips that you can share?

Sweet crisp clean look to that detail. Looks like a wet cherry.

Wow!! Thats a super amazing detail on that mini!

Your work just never ceases to amaze me!! :dblthumb2:

Thanks Dave! That was my first attempt in doing it on a clients car. Eventually I'd like to do the whole car that way, but my gun needs adjusting first.

Thanks Corey! :)

Awesome Work!! What kind of tape did you use?

Thank you! I used Meguiar's 3/4" and 2" tape as well as the 3M 1/4" fine line tape.

Thanks Adam!

Nope, pops hasn't come over yet. I was able to get it a little better, but still not to the point where I'd want to do a whole car with it. I may just buy a mini-gun when I have more cash.

Thanks Bill! The CarPro applicator definitely seems to help keep the OG/OC coverage more uniform, with less heavy areas, though my process would still be the same as outlined in my video here.

Would you spray the whole car with the air brush gun or step up to a normal paint gun? Do you think this would use more or less product than the traditional way? Also would you need a paint booth like area to do this so dirt and dust don't fall on it? Sorry for all the questions, but if this could be sprayed on I would be all in on that!

Anthony Orosco has been applying opti-Guard via mini-gun and/or air brush for years. :props:

No paint booth needed but a mask should be worn. It will use more product for sure...I think Anthony uses about 20cc on a small/average sized car.

that's very interesting! Might give that a try next time! Thanks Chad!

I did do a quick vacuum and wipe-down of the interior while I waited for the owner to show, and yes, I did notice the cheap carpet...I hate when car manufactures use that crap! Reminds me of the old Geo Tackers and Metro's.

Trackers and Metros definitley win top prize for the cheapest carpets ever. I would rather just have rubber then that crap

Porsche trunk carpets blow as well :)

WOW! Really looks great! I should come down and watch the Master at work some day!

:props:

Simply outstanding bud. I did a doublelook at the after pics. That mini is just dripping wet.

How hard did you find the clear to be? I did a 2012 Cooper S today and the black roof seemed to be really soft. D300 left lots and marring, and Ultimate Polish finished it out nicely.
