Not sure about Duragloss #501?

Thanks Inyadreams.

UNfortunately the cart only had one duragloss product and it was a cleaner. I did see though where the M80 was listed.

If anyone had to put duragloss 501 and 105 on the chart, where would they fall?

I've used both on a variety of paints, both SS and BC/CC. I would put 501 as a high 1 on the chart. IMO, it's just an aggressive cleaner wax, albeit a very, very good one. DG105, while listed as a polish by DuraGloss is simply a sealant, with no cutting ability. M80 is my go-to for mild cleaning and polishing on SS paints. Old, aged SS paints are very receptive to its high oil content and its cutting ability can be adjusted by pad choice.

Would be a good practice to apply a 501, follow it up with 601 than apply a layer of 105?

When you plan to layer you want to use DG 601 each time so that it reduces the cure time. Some go right away but I prefer 2 hours between layers.

So are you saying apply 601 then 501 then 601 the 105? And you recommend waiting 2 hours between applications? I'm a rookie and these may be stupid questions.

This is my method: I apply 601/501 at the same time by combining on the pad, then wait an hour and apply 601/105 at teh same time by combining on the pad.

That's an interesting approach. Do you have to apply them at the same time. Can you do it either way?

I know Richard waits between layers of DG, I don't. If I do a 501/601 mix, after I have gone around the car applying it, I go back around and remove it. I then go onto the next step whether it be 15/601 or whatever.

Is it safe to leave it on the car that long in the sun before wiping/buffing the 501/601 off? Same question for 105/601? Do entire car then buff/wipe off even in the sun?

Apply, allow to haze, remove. In my garage I apply, wait 45-60 minutes, remove, usually wait 2 hours for 2nd layer. Sometimes I'm pressed for time so I don't wait 2 hours.

I called Duragloss and the rep I spoke to said to apply 601/105 at a ratio of 4:1. He asked me about the condition of my paint when I asked about the 501. My truck is 3 months old and the paint is still in good condition and he said that I probably didn't need the 501. My question is does 601 have any cutting ability to deal with minor swirling that may be present in a newer vehicle in relatively good condition?

Nope. 601 is a bonding agent that helps 105 bond to the paint and last longer in terms of durability. If you want to remove minor swirling you will have to use a polish like Megs 105, Menzerna..............etc

I'm sorry I got mixed up when I asked does 601 have any ability to remove swirls. I should have asked do Duragloss 501 or Duragloss 105 have any cutting ability for removing minor swirls on a newer vehicle with paint in good condition?

Nope, 601 is just a bonding agent. I realize you have authoritative info to the contrary, but I personally would use 501, using pad choice to adjust the cut level. I've only had 501 on the shelf for about 6 months, so I don't have the experience of the other DG proponents, but it's become my go-to cleaner wax. Earlier this month I did my wife's white BMW, which had a dealer detail prior to her purchasing it in March of this year. I was truly amazed at how much "whiter" it became after a polish with 501. For vehicles that are daily-driven, cleaner wax is the way to go IMO, topping with a finishing wax when desired for longer durability. I'm not near as impressed with DG 105. It seems like good stuff, but I'd rather top my 501 with Collinite 845 or 476.

When I saw your earlier post, I assumed you meant to ask about 501, and not 601. All the damned #'s can get confusing, LOL. Whenever you do any correction work, as a general golden rule, you always want to start out with the least aggressive pad/polish combo and then work up the ladder until you get your desired result. (I'm sure Mike will have an article on this topic if you search). The other thing is that nobody can assess your paint but you. So, yes, 501 may work with a white or green LCC or B/S pad, but you'll have to try it and see. If not, go to Megs 205 and finally M105 depending on how hard your paint is or how deep the swirls go. I'm hoping the 501 will do the trick for you. DG 671 is also another alternative that is more aggressive in correcting than 501, yet is also a one step type product. I've used it with a Surbuff pad even with good results.
If you end up going with a stronger polish, still use 501/601 at 4:1 on a white pad for stellar cleaning and then top it with 105/601 for the win. Let me know how it works for you, either in this thread or by PM pls.

Thanks richy for the response!

I will definitely report back when I finish. My PC 7424XP is supposed to arrive at my house today. I don't have the Duragloss products yet but I plan on ordering them. I have been trying to do my homework first. The Duragloss products appeal to me because I work in the forest industry and I have to travel on gravel or dirt roads regularly as part of my job and I feel I need a product that will offer good protection from those elements. This will also be my first time to do any type of polishing or waxing to a vehicle in my life so I am a little nervous about it. I have been reading extensively on the forum and also have Mike's book on detailing. I do plan to apply the 501/601 then follow it up with 105/601 at the ratio's you recommended. Thanks agian for your help!

hey, guys.. i want to get in on the 501 action as well... are u guys using this like a polish? i've been using xmt 360 for my details, but have a white bmw coming that i would like to possibly try some 501/105 on? was wondering if i need to use i like a polish (18" by 18" section with 4 to 6 section passes) or more like applying a wax? i'm not looking for alot of correction just a good difference in paint clarity!! i will be using the pc 7424xp with a white lc flat pad.. looking for speed and pass suggestions, being somewhat new to the polishing scene!!
