I have a Subaru Owners Club meeting tonight, so I spend a few hours last night making sure I can roll in with my usually super shiny Subaru :) I have also been a tad jealous of all the southerner's walking around in t-shirts outside doing full details meanwhile in my garage 90% IPA is starting to turn into a solid :bat:

Being as it was nearing 10 degrees F for the low temp, this was more of a challenge than usual, fortunately with a little prep and a bit of anti-freeze I was good to go.

The anti-freeze that kept me warm :D

While shopping the other day I decided to pick up some long sleeved dish gloves to help prevent my hands from getting chapped. Normally I just use Nitrile gloves, but they do not have a long enough cuff so I invariably get water in them by dunking my hand too far in the bucket.

Oh, yeah, check out that style:

My first action was to get 1500W worth of halogens going in the garage for about an hour to warm things up, and it ended up doing a pretty good job:

I also had a chance to use the LC grout sponge for my ONR wash, and it was FANTASTIC compared to the Opti-Mit I struggled with last week.

To show how well the grout sponge releases dirt, here is a shot after cleaning one of the lower panels, notice the dirt swoosh on the face:

And here is the same side of the sponge after being rinsed in the fresh water bucket and squeezed out:

As I said, I am really liking this grout sponge, it didn't even require any break in - it was very soft and pliable right out of the package. It also released water right where I needed it, even on the vertical panels. With the Opti-Mit I drained most of my ONR onto the floor doing the vertical panels as it just flowed out the bottom of the mit.

The Grout sponge is a great fit for me, holds plenty of ONR solution, does very well at releasing dirt, and was quite gentle on the paint.

Mmmm Rinse water:

Things are looking pretty good at this point. I decided to hand dry this time since my MB kicked up a lot of dust last time I used it. I went over the entire car with UWW+ after finishing with the ONR to make sure I had a good clean surface.

Then the Flex VRG wanted to come out and play ... it has been feeling neglected since I spend most of my time using the PE-14 lately.

I also got to try out a new wax picked up during the black Friday/Cyber week deals:

Midnight Sun goes on like warm butter, it keeps spreading and spreading and spreading .... and just when you don't think there could possibly be any wax left on your applicator, a blip of pressure and you have covered 2 more panels. It spreads crazy long, longer than Fuzion.

Pulling my car out so I can get both cars in for the night, I tried to get a reflection shot of some of my Christmas lights, but it was crazy cold so I didn't spend much time getting a shot.

Final impressions of the Midnight Sun: I have yet to see the car in direct sunlight, so I will have to reserve some final impressions until that point. However, I thought application was wonderful, I really liked the WOWO nature of the wax and it was easy to work with. I think MS added quite a bit of depth to the paint, but I do not feel that it added much or anything in terms of gloss under the lighting that I had available to inspect it. Under the sun it could be a different story.

Thanks for reading, questions/comments welcomed :)

Looks great Bill! Bfms is probably my current favorite carnuba to use. It goes on easy, comes off easy, and looks amazing! It's one of the only waxes that I have seen the bottom of the pot on!

I love the LC sponge. A tip offered on the forum before is to buy Lowes grout sponges and score the flat side with a utility knife and straight edge to form little squares like the LC blue sponge.

Looks great and your photography is amazing as always.

BFMS is likely my favorite paste.

It is just sooo easy to use, and looks excellent too.

Thanks for the great pics and write-up.

nice writeup Bill

have you tried the chinchilla for an ONR wash as yet?

I'm debating which would be less likely to cause marring btw this and the LC grout sponge. Also keep in mind that my car is not coated like yours.

I'm currently using the sheepskin washpads but I'm only getting about 10-12 washes out of one before it starts falling apart...

I have not used the Ultra-Plush MF mitt for ONR washes, however, I have used the Cobra Bone MF mitt, and found that it stained quite badly when used with ONR washes.

IMO with ONR washes you are capturing more contaminates in your wash media since there is less surface flushing, so the ability for the wash media to release those contaminates is paramount. To date I believe the grout sponge is giving me the best performance for contaminate release of the different media I have tried (including Wool mitt, Cobra MF Bone, MF Towels, Opti-Mitt, and LC Grout Sponge).

This is what my Cobra Bone Sponge looked like after 5-6 ONR washes:

This is what it looks like new:

Thanks for sharing Bill. I always admire your photography skills. :dblthumb2:

ONR doesn't really play well with the Opti-Mitt on vertical panels (kind of ironic isn't it). Let's face it...the vertical panels are WHERE you need most of the ONR...not on the floor, or in your shoe.

Seems with ONR, sponges or good ole MF plush towels work the best. I'm still trying to come up with the best way to apply it.

Midnight Sun wax is a must have on any shelf. Why..?..because you will actually use all of it. I have thrown out more wax containers 3/4 full over the years than I care to admit. NOT so with Midnight Sun. Love it over Wet Diamond. I remember seeing the BFWD/BFMS combo a couple years ago on a car at a car show. It blew me away then, and it still does to this day.

Aww, Thanks Meghan! I still owe you one for allowing me to add that grout sponge to my order at the last second.

It is pretty ironic, but the Opti-Mitt now fills the role of doing wheels & tires for me.

I will have to try the BFWD/MS combo, I have seen some fantastic pictures of that combination.

Thanks Nick Im the MAN

Agreed, I will be using a lot more BFMS in the future.

Looks great Bill! Bfms is probably my current favorite carnuba to use. It goes on easy, comes off easy, and looks amazing! It's one of the only waxes that I have seen the bottom of the pot on!
:) I sure think I stand a chance of getting to the bottom of this pot, but based on my application last night and how thin this stuff spreads, I am going to have to do a lot of waxing :buffing: I will have to keep track but I bet I get over 50 applications out of that pot.

Excellent review :xyxthumbs:.

Given I'm just down the road from you and dealing with those same cold temps I was looking for something that would work with ONR. The sponges seem to fill that need. I missed the BF BOGO (hate it when work gets in the way of fun ) and hearing all the great reviews I know it will be in my next cart.

Great photo skills as always :Picture:

Great review Bill. I have yet to try Midnight Sun, but if it is half as good as BFWD, then I am going to have to get some by spring.

I also use the LC sponge for ONR washes. It does work FANTASTIC! Now I need to try some Midnight sun . . .Thanks for sharing :)

Very nice Bill, your car looks great! BTW I love your choice of anti-freeze ;) A very enjoyable read too, thanks for sharing! Midnight Sun is one of the few waxes I don't own. I decided to quit buying them before I had a chance to collect it :dunno: However as often as I hear good things about it; I guess I'll have to break down and add it to my supply :D

Great stuff. I just got a jar of BFMS as well. I messed with it a SEMA and was very impressed with it !!!!!

Thanks for the review. I do like sponges too at times.

Do you think the UWW+ actually cleaned up what ONR did not or was it just peace of mind?

Nice review Bill. Midnight Sun was the first carnauba paste wax I used. I always thought carnaubas were hard to remove, but I was wrong. I feel like most other waxes won't impress me as much as this did.

Great pics! Definitely going to pick up a LC sponge now...thanks!
