downloaded sunday to replace a expiring one. (cant remember the name). way better so far. the other one would always update every time you started up. put the pc in slow mode. hated it!

Sounds like you had an old version of Norton. The newer versions use a lot less resources.

I have ditched both McAfee and Norton and have been using Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free and have been using it over a year on all my computers with great results.

Webroot is another great alternative.

  • Works great
  • Transparent to system performance

If you don't want to pay Microsoft Security Essentials is a great program. :iagree:

Otherwise ESET is my personal flavor of choice.

There is no anti-virus software out there that detects and cleans every virus 100%. A layered security approach is usually best. On top of every anti-virus software I also install and use Malwarebytes and Spybot (both are free). Both do very well to complement the active software. Spybot configures your system to avoid well known web sites and domains that harbor illicit software. The scanning is good but not as fast as Malwarebytes. If anything gets past three layers; well then folks it comes down to poor luck and human behavior.

Ive gone away from the McAfee and Norton bloatware.

I prefer Avira, and Malwarebytes for my computers.

I use:

Microsoft Security Essentials
malware antibytes
AVG
advance system care

I use all four and run them every 2 weeks or so. I also back up most documents and photos to my email, dropbox, or photo bucket. best part is all of those program are free. I also have a extra hardrive that I use to make a copy of my hardrive on my laptop, so that has my videos and operating system.I old videos and files i keep on burned DVDs.

This ^^^ I actually used ESET for about 2 years until the beginning of this year and the new MSE was getting such rave reviews around the hardware forums I frequent that I had to try it. I'm sold with it plus Malwarebytes.

ESET and karpersky are my main anti-virus although I don't use any anti-virus at all but it's usually what I install on friend's and family pcs.

For spyware and suc I use "spybot" - this one is truly great and free.

Like Legacy GT mentioned: Here is a 2010 report on AV: http://www.av-comparatives.org/image...c_report25.pdf

My choices are:

1. ESET = Low system memory use. Currently Testing Their Ver. 5.
2. F-Secure = Great AV program.
3. Avira = Uses alot of sys. memory.
4. G-Data = Caused problems with Sys. and was removed.

Reminder never run two Anti-Virus program at the same time, this will
cause problems and slow your computer down.

Avira does have a FREE Anti-Virus available. No confidence in AVG or Avast.
Bit Defender caused my system to slow down and I removed.

You can download various Trial Version of the software before deciding on what works
on your desktop or laptop, etc.

im running McAfee on my lap top, but it comes from the missus work so it doesnt cost me enything, no problems with it since ive had the new lap top for over 12 months.

Security essentials and Malwarebytes Pro are what I use . You won't need anything else.

Excellent thread, display on a public forum your layers of protection. You are making it really easy for...well nevermind ;)

I have nothing worth stealing. Go for it lol.

Not me, I like my job. I'm teasing anyway because if someone were searching here for your Internet habits then chances are your box is already compromised. :)

I've always wanted to try Eset, but something about paying for software makes me resist the urge.
