First time posting here but I have been lurking for a while now. I recently had my eyes opened to the world of detailing and I am already hooked. I have begun building my arsenal to attack my car's finish come Spring time.

I have a Acura TL in nighthawk black pearl, probably one of the worst colors to have for those that can't devote as much time to detailing as many of you do. Based on the descriptions of other car's finishes, I would say mine is in pretty bad shape. Tons of rids, holograms, light scratches, etc. Unfortunately I bought the car before I was aware of what a car's paint should look like.

Here's my question. I have not yet been able to purchase a machine polisher yet and don't see being able to any correction any time soon (apartment living and time are my enemies). Given that my car is in sub par condition, if the surface is properly cleaned and clayed, would it still be beneficial to put some sort of better protection on the car? What remains on it now is definitely not working too well, very little beading and it looks dull and grey. I know that some protection is better than none but I don't want to do any further damage to the very soft Acura paint.

Thanks for all the help and I look forward to learning much more through this forum!

You should absolutely protect it until you get a chance to correct it.

I would give it a good wash, clay it, and put the wax/sealant of your choice on it.

Protect it for now with a wax of your choice ..

If I happen to use Klasse, will it be a pain to strip it later when I go to polish?

Once you start polishing with any abrasives, it will remove the wax/sealant very quickly. But be sure to clay before you start polishing, claying will help remove some of the wax/sealant.

All of the above plus WELCOME aboard!! What part of the country are you in?

After claying I would suggest either Collinite 845 or Klasse sealant. Both very durable and will last until spring.

Hey.....I live in Alpharetta..........Just look for the silver BMW Z3 thats really clean and shiney!

Yea I was looking at either one of those since they both seem to have and easy on-easy off application.

Haha, I'll be sure to keep an eye out. :xyxthumbs:

I put on Klasse AIO and topped it with a coat or two of Collinite 845. Seems to be very well protected so far. Its been about two months with several washes and some rain. I have also used some Dodo Basics of Bling Detailing Spray after washes. I swear the paints keeps looking better and better. Right now is the best it has looked since brand new. By the way I do all the work by hand, no machines... yet.

That sounds like a great combination for my needs right now. Granted it won't look the best with all the swirls, it will keep it protected until I can get to it.

On an unpolished car?

I was thinking the same thing. Once polished I would consider it but I feel like it would be more work later on when I try to remove the coating to polish.

You'll be surprised at how good it will look if you do a couple treatments of AIO and then maybe follow with a layer or 2 of KSG or a 'nuba wax.

It doesn't remove the swirls, but it certainly lessons their appearance.

If you are looking for longevity for your $, you may want to look into the Duragloss line of products... You could top the Duragloss with the Collinite 845 you already have. Duragloss products are priced right there with Collinite 845 you have bought already... I've had very good longevity with DG topped with 845 on my truck and my daily driver civic. Winterized in September/October and the paint is still beading like you wouldn't beleive on both my vehicles.
