I was wondering if anyone could help me with trying to do a 95% correction on my 1998 deville d'elegance. The paint is freaking invulnerable to anything lol. I tried correcting one time and I gave up because it took me two and a half days just for half the car. It is white diamond tri-coat. I have a DA and a rotary with most of the LC pads and a wool pad at my disposal. If any of you guys have some recommendations that would be great. :xyxthumbs:

What compound are you using? Did you use the rotary and wool? I know that Caddy clear is hard, but you ought to be able to correct it with rotary/wool.

I am using the 3M compound the highest cut one in the purple bottle, I only used the DA with the best cutting pad I have. I get afraid of the rotary sometimes because there is some clear-coat failure. Also the wool pad I have is pretty dirty from bodywork use. Got any ideas on how to get in clean? :confused:

I did a 2009 black sts this summer. That clear was like concrete! At the time I only had a Griots DA. So, After trying everything I had, I had to break out the 4 in Surbuf with 105. Then I used Powerfinish, then Micro polish.

This one? 3M Perfect-It 3000 Machine Polish, 3M 06064, remove swirl marks, 3M Perfect It Swirl Remover That doesn't seem to be the most aggresive. What DA and what pads?

If your wool is dirty spur it out and wash it with some APC or Dawn and spin it dry.

I use a PC HD and this pad: CCS 6.5 inch Yellow Cutting Pad

Also the compound I am using AG doesn't sell yet. here is a link:
3M Perfect-It Rubbing Compound, 1 Quart (946mL), 06085

I think that is it, when I was looking for it I went to the 3M site and bought the compound listed as the most aggressive after going through the products. Ohh and yeah I forgot I have some APC+... I'll use that, thanks!!:props:

Hmm I don't know why cadillac paint is so hard for us detailers lol.. Yet it's so easy to scratch! I know how you probably felt with just a DA, when I first tried to correct this car I only had a DA also. I got to get a surbuf and that powerfinish, I kept reading good things about them.

My audis have rediculous clear as well. My DA can only jewel the finish with LC foam, the surbuf pads made a difference, but still not 90% correction. I've had to resort to a rotary and surbuf/M105. I've also done rotary with LC yellow and M105 & BF SRC with similar results, but much slower arm speed.

I found that the surbuf pads and rotary don't get along really well, the pads get overloaded w/ product and matted pretty quick so you have to do an on-the-fly cleaning after every section, change pads frequently and keep your rpms pretty low. The rotary, surbuf & m105 combination has some serious cutting power though and finished down very well on audi paint.

Alright this seem's to be the way to go, how did the car turn out? What percentage of the paint would you say was corrected?

When I did a Cadillac XLR-V the only thing I found that would work is the meguars microfiber kit but using megs 105 instead of the cutting compound they include while using a painfully slow arm speed and very small sections... took me 4+ days...

Sure they do, here's the 06085: 3M Perfect-It 3000 Rubbing Compound, 3M Rubbing Compound, 3M Perfect It 3

Alright this seem's to be the way to go {Surbuf/rotary/M105}

There's certainly other combos--you could use the Surbuf and M105 on your PC-XP since you expressed concerns earlier about CC failure, etc.

Normal GM paint is hard, an XLR is probably even harder since it is (was) a Corvette.

Sounds like I got to find a weekend to do this car, it's all the paint defects you can imagine AIO. I was gonna buy the MF kit but saw some reviews from people recommending against it.
